i bet you've never had this happen to you
Question:
So the wife and i are driving home in her 90 dodge spirit, ya the Z was parked that night... maybe for the better. Anyway i like to think i keep up the fleet pretty good here, so when she just died and left us on the side of the road i was less than happy. So i tear into her the next night after work, and i have spark, fuel, and funky comp. hummm. So i figure well the timing belt must of sliped or something right? By this time it's like 2:00 AM and i am not a happy camper, but i continue with my time belt endevour. And i get to looking and the cam sproket is not quite straight. So i start to remove the valve cover and to my frekish amazment.... the cam shaft broke in two!!! HOLY crap man! Long story short, our one of two shops that are open os Sun. just happen to have one in stock! WOW So i went though like half a tube of assembly grease and for under $150 got her back on the road by Mon. morning. Sure is a good thing that the 2.5 L in there is a non interferance engine! Anyone have similar stories??? Answer:

I used to have a Spirit. It burned because the mechanic that it got taken to didn't bother to replace the valve cover gasket and it was too late before I knew anything was wrong. Had a valve head drop off #6 Exhaust at 41,000 miles in a Chevy V8 during a cold startup. Had rods make ventilation holes in the block of VW and Toyotas. Had rod and mains seize on an 18R-GR Had a wheel pass me one day, as the wheels studs snapped and chucked the wheel out the side of the car. Had a trailer pass me when the trailer tongue broke. Had the drive pin on an L-Engine shear. And yes, I have had a camshaft break in a 1966 Corvair Corsa, at about 6300rpms at the top of second gear... Course a rod let go simultaneously and shot tow of the lifters into the pan, leaving large dents... People Are Idiots, Just look around here and you will see! #1 Grammar Police Gripe: subject verb and predict noun. by the second half of the second sentence I realised your wife had not died and I was very relieved you did't tear into her. Then again I would probably "torn into" or "chewed out" my wife if she had died on me. It's so inconvenient and she's the only one who can program the TV remote and has all the computer codes. #2 Is there something in the air?: #2 son broke his cam shaft - rebuilt engine - on his '97 Pontiac Saturday night. Had the cam on the '69 2000 roadster snap in half, between 2 and 3. Head warped, some PO decked the bottom, but not the top. Hence bow, hence snap. Alex '77 280Z '69 2000 roadster (fathers, but I'm the pseudotechnician) Answer:
Had a rocker shaft snap on my wifes Dodge Caravan. Broke the tower on the head that it bolts to also. Ended up replacing both heads with rebuilt units. I've never had an engine failure in any of my cars. The engine in my Z has never been opened up except for valve adjustments. This old Z just keeps going and going. My brother had a Toyota Corolla GTS he bought at an auction. It had a little knock so we revved it up to see what would happen. Next thing we know, there was total silence and a hole you could put a fist through in the side of the block. I DID have a camshaft break! When we lost 3R Liner on EG101B, liner bottom let loose and sent the rod right through the side of the engine block. Took out the camshaft. Man, that was a $30,000 repair. Thank you Reynolds-French! Half Price of the OEM!!! Why replace when you can repair for half the cost? 48 hours and we were up and running again. Amazing work. How could I forget that episode? Being up most of the 48 hours it was down probably helps with that part of it... People Are Idiots, Just look around here and you will see!
