Tell them that they were all parts cars and provide the proof of sale, receipt, title with amount payed or otherwise. If you can't do that then you probably didn't pay enough to the IRS and will be in trouble.

You dont have to explain a damn thing to them and I seriously doubt the letter said exactly that, in fact I bet your full of sh** and it doesnt say anything even remotly close to what you described.
If it wasnt delivered registered mail then you never got it and they cant say you did.
Kinda like a jury summons. You do NOT have to answer them as they cant prove you ever recived it. When they tell you a warrant will be issued if you dont come in thats total BS.

The $250 billion figure is for all of the affected areas of Louisiana which includes about 1.34 million people in the greater N.O. area alone. It also includes a lot of infrastucture like road, dikes, schools, reconstituting of the barrier islands and just about everything else. No body is being handed $500k. As far as a senator asking for $250 billion well, sometimes you have to swing for the fences to hit a single.
I'd rather spend the money rebuilding one our greatest southern cities than the $500,000,000,000 we have spent on that s-hole Iraq.

Ive ignored countless letters that demanded I contact someone to explain something or come in and explain something. Never heard another word about it. Ive been audited and asked about something once and how I afforded it and I replied none of your business and nothing more was asked. They probably snooped around my bank accounts and crap, but I got nothing to hide and they didnt find jack sh**.

Are you absolutely sure this is an IRS letter? I'd call them first because this does not sound like something they would write or go after. Now if you had 4 or 5 brand new cars, live in a huge house, had a second vacation home somewhere, and filed income of $30,000, then there is something to question. And just as a side comment, IRs usually sends letters "Registered".

Don't waste your time comparing it to the Afgan or Iraq War, you are looking at the wrong people for help in the government. America sees Bush as this master over the govt in which he actually has very limited powers. His most powerful tool is the ability to get on TV and say sh** about whatever he wants. It won't necessarily cause anything to happen, but he can slap his agenda on the nation anytime he wants, no other branch or sector of the govt has that ability [to do it in a unified manner like Bush for the exec. branch].
The sad part is between all the money the U.S. has given to other countries to help with their natural disasters in the past couple years, this could have already been completely funded. I don't regret for one second their choice in that matter, but it's a good reality check to realize if you expect to get back at all what you give in the international community [from the U.S. standpoint], you are doing so in vain.
People will never realize the unmeasurable COMPLEXITY there is in assigning monies and attacking initiatives on such a broad scale like Kartrina's damage to the coastal areas.
You know what would happen if the govt just 'gave' 500000000$ "to" new orleans? Massive curruption. It already happened! What about to the senator? What the hell is he/she going to do except start the process of deciding who gets what money. What are you going to do, go find some company and tell them "Rebuild this city and I'll pay whatever you want"? Where to start? Interstate highways? Hospitals? Homes?
You can't build the homes until you have the roads to get there. You can't build the roads until you have designated the city ordinaces in which to build them by. You can't decide the ordiances until you decide their jurisdiction [or if the city even exists!]. You can't decide their jurisdiction until the levy's etc. are redesigned so the land boundries are concrete [not literally ofcourse ;)]
There is miles and miles and miles of red tape to sort through to get this situation resolved. Has the progress over the last 6 months been enough? I have no idea and I am willing to bet very few do. The best thing people can do is go out there and lend a helping hand until the govt gets their sh** straight and starts making more noticeable progress.
I travel between houston and live in austin and trust me, I've heard and talked to the people who have escaped the devastation more than I'd probably like to.

* I once tried to illustrate the diff between 1 million and 1 billion to my kids. We had an electric fly zapper down by our horses, and when we first hook it up in the spring, it was electrocuting 50 flies a minute. (These are one of the great inventions of all time, by the way. I rank them right up there with miniskirts and the lighbulb.) So anyway, I show my daughter and her friend how to do the math, and we figure out that, if it kept killing flies at 50/hr (which of course it doesn't), that it would take about 2 weeks to do 1 million of them.
Then we figure out 1 billion. I had to redo the results like four times myself because I could hardly believe it. It would take 38 YEARS.

I don't mind the gov't helping somewhat to rebuild, but on one condition:
The new city MUST BE BUILT ABOVE SEA LEVEL. Rebuilding New Orleans in the same place is asking for destruction again next year, or the year after.
Judging by the hurricane in Australia this week (Category 5, 185 mph winds) which was bigger than Katrina, there are bigger ones to come this season for us. Funny that you don't see more about the Australia cyclone, actually.... but that's US news for you. If it didn't happen on this continent, it didn't happen.

Eeehm OR you could start building something that even resembles a levy not built ondirt to begin with... that levy system was a joke... more than 45% of holland was under water, and we get som craze tidal waves and wind ... as the island that forms the UK and the Dutch shorline form a thunnel... .. How do they know how much you pay for your used car's? Or do they go by book value regardless of what you pay.
We used to right bill of sale recipts for cars stating sold for $1.00, since TX used to tax based on what you paid. Don't know if it's still the same, doubt it. In NC we are taxed on book value. Interesting that they compare # of cars owned to income level over there. How do they know the cars were not gifts?
