I wouldnt go so far as to call the guy that owned all the cars a LOSER. I mean, the cars never made it out of the garage, so it would seem his security system was not all that bad.
sounds like this guy has a LOT of cars. Dealerships have all their keys in one lock box and all the cars on the lot are gassed up and ready to go, are they losers because of this?
Just because some sh!theads found a way into a locked garage and cracked open the key box does not mean the owner should be punished with higher rates.

Answer:

sure i hope it does mean higher rates since it shows that just about anyone can (and did) come in and do 1.7 million in damage. he's a looser because he lost rare cars. if they were stored, why were they fueld and battery connected? (winners not only remove batteries during storage, they employ a guard for $10/hr and give them a rifle. much cheaper in the long run.)
car lots are different since the cars are delivered for resale so their state is not "in storage". cars inside usually at least have their batteries disconnected. ymmv.
Answer:

What if he drives them every day? (not every car every day, but each car gets driven once every 2 or 3 weeks? That would be a pain in the ass to have them not fueled up and battery disconnected every single time you wanna drive! There is no reason you can bitch at the owner for that. He should've had a better security system in the fact that no one arrived there to catch the kids in the act.

Answer:

You are missing the point here guys. You shouldn't be complaining about the owner. The kids are the sh!theads here, don't forget that. They didn't break in to steal a car, they just wanted to smash his up. If it had been a theif, then sure, tlak about how dumb the owner was to leave the cars gassed up and ready to go. Since the kids never got out, it would seem he may have contained them, but since their only objective was to destroy someone elses property, they didn't care. If you are guarding against theives, I would thinkm cantainment is a good option. If a theif can't get out with the car, he is pretty likely to just leave. Punk a$$ kids don't care if they can't get the cars out, they just want to smash things that don't belong to them.

What's my point?
Oh, just that it doesn't say what kind of security was on the garage in the article, how it was circumvented, or any other such details. The article doesn't say the facility was poorly secured. Nor does it say there were aliens and terrorists. We're just making that part up.
It is therefore premature to make any sort of judgment call on the owner of the facility or his foresight to prevent unauthorized access.

Answer:

thats what insurance is for? right? I dont feel sorry for the owner, I also have no sympathy for the kids either. I do agree somewhat with TKR though...if you have a warehouse full of antique jags dont you think you'd have the equivalent of like a brinks or ADT or whatever that immediatly alerts police if a window or door is opened or something? At the very least put the keys in a safe. How hard is it to have numbered keys in a safe? I'll admit, it's hard to judge when the full circumstances are unknown though.

Answer:

You think Brinks or ADT alarm calls the police right away? First the call goes the them, then they have a list of numbers to call to find out if it was a false alarm. If they can't get hold of you, they MAY call the police. Or they may have a rent-a-cop in the area or alarm tech go check it out first. The police are the last to be notified. In some cases the only exception is for fire, but there is also a protocall for that as well.
I agree as above. Why should I have to be prepared for every instance just in case someday someone decides to break in. His insurance co may have said as long as they are in a locked warehouse, in an unmarked building, with opaque windows and a simple alarm, then you are safe enough fo us. we don't know the details, and alarms are not that hard to disable.
If they found the outside phone line on the building, cut it and entered. The siren wouldn't draw attention itself especially if it were in a warehouse in an industrial area. Then the kids would have time to find the siren, and cut it's wire. Now that it's quiet, they have all night to play. If the police did get a call to check out the siren, it would just be a drive by unless forced entry was obvoius.
The kids are entirely at fault. To even think this was a good idea is a sign of bad judgement. To follow thru, is a sign of no repsect.

I love these threads when everyone gets to mindlessly rant their frustrations.
Now - I porposely said "mindlessly" because "uninformedly" sounds akward and ignorantly ( which only means not knowing) is just as inciting a flame.
We are all "ignorant" because we do not have all the facts.
We are all indignant because we all if not love, at least respect older collector cars.
1. Inside job / disgruntled employee - very very good and likely point. Gets around security system no matter what it is.
"Locks only keep honest people out"
2. Sue the parents - speaking out of ignorance, I would still bet that the parents and or the kids are on the "dole" (welfare) and you couldn't get a dime or thrupence out of them.
3. Hang'em and various other methods of punishment - well it is England or Commonwealth thereof - so as an armchair historian I believe in old time creative punishments: stocks and pillories (try siting confined for a few days and see how you feel especially when all the villagers are pelting you with eggs rotted vegies and such)?
Flailing? Drawing and quartering? Tar (very hot) & feathers - but that would conote "shame" and our modern society does not seem to have much of any "shame". Look at the interest in "Tabloid News".
4. How about real creative punishment - Chain gangs (real hard labor) that benefits the community?
Oh well - good rants all
BTW - don't pick on TKR514 so much - he means well and is no more opinionated than the rest of us - it just comes off harsher than I think he means to.
Of course I'll retract that when he gores my ox again - but then I've always said "If we didn't have Bubbles to pick on - we'd just have to pick on eachother".

Answer:

"We are all "ignorant" because we do not have all the facts."
not really (you actually have that backwards).
ignorant people can have all the facts but will ignore them.
intelligent people can gather relevant facts and ignore the irrelevant ones.
there are enough facts to render an informed, intelligent opinion. the people who did this should be punished to the full extent of the law( that is what justice is) and the underwriter of said collection will undoubtedly be reevaluating the policy(since that is what they do).
Answer:

Ignorant can mean simply not having knowledge of a specific thing. So in this case we are all ignorant of the specifics.
Ignorant is not always an antonym for unintelligent.
Regarding this case, IMO crimes against property should always be considered less serious than crimes against people, and therefore should be punished less severely.
Millions of dollars worth of beautiful cars they may be, but in a larger sense it's still just STUFF.

Yes! And decrease the surplus population! Are there not workhouses??
Answer:

that's why i said "to the fullest extent of the law". small property crimes are just that, small property crimes. distroying ~30 cars worth ~1.7 million is NOT a small insignificant crime so punishment should also be at a maximum. if the fullest extent is hanging, so be it. laws without consequence hinder justice for all.

ARubabill, the kids should be punished, certainly. But much less so than a rapist, murderer, kidnapper, or even mugger. IMO.
Ilya, your name would indicate Russian heritage. But your embrace of, rather than fear of, a power-mad unrestrained lawless totalitarian state indicates otherwise. Try reading Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's "Gulag Archipelago"!
Answer:

not mine (or yours) at all.
if that is the penalty under the law in the u.k., then that agrees with the morals of that country and the people there have the free will to choose to break the law (and suffer the prescribed consequenses).
it would be immoral and unsensible to suggest otherwise. free will in a free society still has consequenses.

Answer:

tkr,
So, the LAW is your highest ideal, rather than the principals behind it?
Do you really believe that laws and penalties are necessarily the morals of a particular country?
The LAW is becoming less reflective of the morals and will of THE PEOPLE, and more the will of the STATE, which of course reasons that it can live well outside them. YOU break the law, and woe unto you. The President or a congressman breaks the law... no (or minimal) consequences.
And you say it's IMMORAL to even SUGGEST that penalties under whatever land's LAW might be innappropriate (which I certainly DO suggest if they hang kids for wrecking expensive cars in the U.K.)?! Amazing...
BEWARE of making the State your God.

Answer:

Ilya,
agreed, community hours and stiff monetary penalty would seem suitable.
Regarding dictatorships and crime rate, it would seem OBVIOUS to me (and less so to many, apparently), that at some point the CURE of authoritarianism is far more evil and more despicable than the illness (i.e., crime)!
Answer:

"So, the LAW is your highest ideal, rather than the principals behind it?"
wrong again.
the principal is: do not take from someone else. if you do, there will be a penalty. THEY chose to accept the penalty (whatever it is in this case).
to do a serious crime and expect no serious penalty is immoral.
Answer:

Your use of the word "immoral" confuses me. Obviously, it is immoral to wreck someone else's property, but you say it is immoral to do so AND EXPECT NO PENALTY. As if to say that it is perfectly MORAL to wreck someone's property IF you do so expecting to take the penalty. Bizarre.
Whether there is a penalty or not, it is immoral.
Answer:

no. i said it would be immoral NOT to bring down the full weight of the law for the crime. not doing so would be immoral. and yes, if you wreck someones property you SHOULD expect to be punished.
i don't give a rats rear (nor should the law)whether the person doing the crime thinks he's moral in causing the destruction or not. either way, he's liable for damages caused.

13:3
And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.

Answer:

Romans 7:1-6
7:1 Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?
2 For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.
3 So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.
4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.
5 For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
