Email is in fact a French word - has been for centuries - means 'enamel' - therefore the US copied our word as they copied our vins - surest form of flattery......:)

Look up émail in a French/English dictionary - the word means enamel
- the contraction of electronic mail (or if you prefer courrier électronique :) has come to stand for email in the English language !
Since the US claims 'ownership' of the web, the US must also be responsable for the abuse of the French word émail - n'est ce pas :) ?

Sean - I lived in France for many months back in 2000. Had a blast. Lived with several families - great people. We didnt see eye to eye politically always, but all they took me in and treated me like family and that made an impression on me.
I think the US/French jokes are just humorous extensions of our countries political differences. But if I see you driving your Z around, you'll get a thumbs up from me regardless of your politics.

I have not yet see a law over here against using the word “email” instead of "couriel"
In fact most of us are using the later term of e-mail when we ask for one’s web address!
Still, if you think it’s a reaction against “big brotha’s” country, you could not be more wrong. Maybe you haven’t noticed it yet, but you aren’t the only country using English to communicate over this little planet, in fact I bet that in 10 to 15 years there will be more non USA web user exchanging in English than in your country. See, when I want to send an e-mail to Franck in Holland… I use English, if I want to send an e-mail to a Z friend in Spain or Sweden guess what… I use English… (OK mine isn’t really the best). So do they…
What we are only trying to do is to keep our native language alive for the longest time.
Maybe you will be forced to do the same in 50 years if Spanish become the N°1 language in your country…
So don’t be too paranoid, we are far more concerned by India or China than by Uncle Sam, after all they don’t have Z at all over there J

Nothing in particular.
They have a problem with the English.
And more properly, the English Language!
They can't stand to see the last vestige of French being the "universal language of diplomacy"---it is quickly being supplanted universally with English simply because of it's ease of adaptation and breadth of colonial empire.
While in the 1700 and 1800's French was THE language to know, to show you were cultured and travelled, today it's easily English you must have a knowledge of, as well as local dialects just to function.
Everywhere you go, people know English.
ANd the French resent it, as it marks the end of their decline from a once-great colonial power.
Britian, on the other hand if nothing else has the language as their lasting mark of their once-expansive Empire.
The US? Well, they really never had an empire, never had true imperialistic aspirations (thought for a time they travelled that route simply because it was the thing to do---they shed their "colonies" fairly quickly, and really never went out to collect colonies---they harvested them by kicking old-world ass on the new continent where they existed....

The US was a colony. Save for that fact, we would all be speaking Cajun French like the Quebec Separatists!
We were a British Colony, as was India, and other parts of the world. Generally, British Colonies did O.K. after reversion or independence.
Colonies of "other" nations fared not so well. Especially Spain...

I give G.B. their due, they had us as a colony, and we eventually BOUGHT a big chunk of our country from FRANCE (uh, I will skip the obvious opening there to comment about 'selling out'---and about their treatment of the locals...)After which we kicked the OTHER colonial power (Spain) off the new world (or at least our part of it...) so the British Influence is where I will place the English Language Emphasis. They decry that American English is the predominant form used worldwide despite heavy influence on the continent (not in small part due to what, a BILLION Indians having the Queen's English as school standard!) But a Billion Chinese are rushing to learn American English. (Whos learning French? I know Saddam wanted fluency, maybe Libya, Algeria....Vietnam kicked em out long ago and reverted to their native language-thought American English is popular there for some reason....)
So while Britan decrys the Americanization of the Queens English, the French make no differentiation, it's not French---so it's BAD! Those damnable pommy bastards! LOL

Uhm tony they started mainly a Spanish/ Dutch Colony, it was new york that was founded by the Dutch .. called New Amsterdam... hence Wallstreet ( walstraat) Brooklyn ( Breukelen) Harlem (Haarlem) and so on...
However even back then the Dutch where overtaxed... and peter styvensand did promote the trade with the english for the caribean ( still Dutch at this point) It turned out to be a slave outpost... ( yeah we behaved real humanrights pc)
The Dutch empire together with the English where THE world powers.. the French where not even close

His position was 'defence - not attack' ! It worked because the Germans ran out of steam.
He was looked to in the early days of WWII because of his 'heroic' victory at Verdun but his, 'sit back and wait' attitude didn't work in 1940 and he 'gave in' and created the Vichy Republique !

Do you understand von Falkenhayn's strategy at Verdun? Petain had nothing to do with the Maginot Line... And, France was already defeated in 1940 when Petain was called out of retirement to take over a lost cause..he did what he thought was best for France in the face of an impossible task i.e. victory....

"Petain had nothing to do with the Maginot Line" yes...and The Maginot Line has nothing to do with this subject (as an aside, I've visted one of the best preserved underground forts, just NE of Strasbourg and it is no wonder that Hitler wanted to go around the line - it was VERY impressive, and impregnable - some forts held out for weeks after being encircled and did in fact stretch from Corsica to The English Channel) What let it down was the total unpreparedness of the 'regular' mobile army for Blitzkrieg tactics - this army should have been enough to hold the Germans back but was badly managed. The BEF fought very well, the Belgians and Dutch too but there was too much pressure, the supply lines for each Allied army weren't maintained well enough and the liaison between them appalling, espeically from the French !

Fact is France would be a German speaking nation without the U.S.A and it's allies, some respect and appreciation is well over due... If you dont believe that then a history lesson is in order.
- Over 125,000 Americans died on French & European soil from October 1917 until November 1918 - mostly fighting to free France from German invasion.
- On D-Day - June 6th, 1944 over 2500 Americans died on the beaches in Normandy, France - fighting to free France from German occupation.
- Over 400,000 Americans died fighting in World War 2, again in large part fighting to free France from German occupation.

Just anothe example of America going into a former European Colony that was mucked up after WW2 because we were too weak to let countries be independent instead of letting the Euros keep "Their Empires"
Arguably, had French Indochina been given to the Japanese after WWI (AS PROMISED), the expansionist tendencies of the Emperor might have had less fire, but nooooo, we had to give them to FRANCE because they were our "Allies" against Germany....
And then again, after WWII we made a blunder by AGAIN letting the FRENCH take over their former colony in Vietnam---instead of letting out #1 man on the ground HoChiMinh run his little cadre of socialists to run the country.
If the Indonesians could kick the Dutch out of their country in 1949 with little more than sticks, Unka Ho would have run roughshod over the French Foreign Legion as soon as all the Waffen and Panzer SS troops were up with their contracts after the War (complete with new identities---courtesy of WHO again?)

Check the facts and figures, Sean. A stable Europe with it's socialist systems of support needs cheap oil to keep going. If Europe is destabilized by high oil prices and interruption in supply, the national interests of the USA will be impacted severely.

We are still at your side in Afghanistan, we are doing the job together there…'cause it was just, and as a fact I can tell you that if we are very impressed by the technology of the US Army, I personally know a few US officer that are equally impressed by our know-how in the “clean-up this mess”.
So YES the French army isn’t a colonial Army anymore, and we are send more than our turn in all the Peace or Humanitarian action on OUR little planet, is it really worth all that bashing?
