ZR Problem with a new Lexar Jump Drive
Question:

My Lexar 1Gig Jump Drive has over 200 pics of Zcars on it, that I would like to put onto my computers hard drive. The problem is my computer doesn't recognize the jump drive. My computer has the latest Windows operating system on it and the Jump drive doesn't require a Driver.
Anyone have fix or similar issue?. Arrrrrgh.
Thanks in advance.

Answer:

Several things can cause this issue....if you are getting an error msg - please advise...have you added any new devices that use a drive letter...such as camera, printer, ext hard drive....also assuming you're not on a network....
Answer:

USB devices do not use drive letters the same way hard drives do. They are dynamic.
It is usually something very simple but might as well go down the list.
1. Does your USB controller appear in the device manager and if it does when you right click it and hit properties does it say everything is working correctly?
2. Does your computer have USB 1 or 2 ports?
3. Is the Jumpdrive a USB 2.0 only device? Not sure if it is possible to be a 2.0 only device but that would be the first thing to check.
4. Try the drive on another computer and verify it is accessable.
PS Under device driver one of the controllers should say USB2 Enhanced Host Controller for it to be a USB2.0 controller.

I have tried 3 other computers with this thing tonite, no dice. Doesn't show up on any of them. I think I am Screwed. :o(
I only added the jump drive, it worked on Sat when I downloaded my pictures onto it from my girlfriends computer.
USB Device not recognized is the message.
No network, personal computer.
The Jump drive doesn't even light up. I don't know how data recovery can be done if the drive doesn't even light up.

Answer:

Sounds like it got damaged in some way.
I was curious about 2.0 to 1.0 interoperability and all 2.0 devices should fall back to full speed or slow speed automaticaly.
Did the drive get wet?
Answer:

When I right clicked it, it says looking for Drivers. This jump drive only needs drivers with windows 98. I have Windows XP.

The default behavior is, but you can assign them based on USB_ID. If you plug it into a different physical USB port, it will make it difficult to map.
Answer:

Check to make sure the jump drive is on.....some have a small sliding on and off switch.....

Answer:

All usb devices need drivers in some form or fashion. Most jump drives have the drivers built into them in a small area of memory. when the device is plugged in, the USB host controller querries the device and the device provides drivers along with other information. Windows 98 did not have the ability to handle this hence the need to preload drivers. You may be able to download win 2k drivers for it and manually install them and see if the drive will work. sounds like it is not identifing itself correctly. Check all contacts on the device and then try it on your girlfriends machine again since it worked on there once before. you can also try purchasing a smaller version of the jump drive and plugging it in. If the machine sees that one plug your 1 gig one into another port and it might utilize the same drivers since they are currently in memory.

Thanks Guy's, I appreciate the hints.
I might try to buy the smaller memory version to see if that will work.
No switch on the drive. It doesn't light up when it's plugged into a USB port on any computer. Tried it on 3 computers at work this morning, Nothing. :o(
I don't think I can use recovery software on it if it doesn't turn on. I will also try to recover the pics from my girls computer. She deleted them last week. Maybe I can use some picture recovery software on her computer?.

I had a customer today with same problem so I went searching and found this.....not sure if 1 gig is setup the same.....this worked on customers

Here's the temp fix....
I have opened two of the Lexar 256 JumpDrive Secure units that "went bad" and found that both had broken solder contacts with the 48Mhz clock component (looks like a oval, silver hat). I believe that this piece syncronizes the communication between the computer and the device. Being broken, windows knows something plugged into the USB port, but it can't identify it, or access it.
To test for this problem, try pinching the drive (on the back half, where it says "JumpDrive") as you insert it into the port. Pinching here presses the component onto its connections. Keep pinching while windows identifies it, and you should see the drive contents as usual. If you release enough that the contact breaks inside, the drive will still register, but you can't see the contents.
If you just want to recover the data, get someone (or something) to continue pinching the device until the contents is copied off.
The fix? Carefully pry the case open (most likely voiding the warranty) and solder the component back down. The case is two halfs, glued together. But with some patient prying into the middle of the rubber, with my lock-blade, it popped open. Soldering precisely posed the biggest challenge. Now the drive works reliably.
Hope it helps

Answer:

do what jdbaker says!
I had a 512meg drive that "went bad" but was able to remove everything off it to a CD before it "failed completely"
Autopsy revealed that solder joints on the pads from the USB contact to the main board had broken (maybe from flexing).
If you loaded the stuff on there, it's still there till it's erased, or you run around with wool sox on a polyester carpet and ESD the hell out of the chip and blank it....
So it may be just broken wires inside---credence given by the fact you don't even get the light, and the devices are not recognized by more than one computer!
Though if hte chip itself has gone bad......then you're SOL. But my bet is on solder connections. Try to make it work, then try and get a refund. They are usually mutually exclusive of one another. I now posess the worlds worst looking 512 mb drive. I call it "Frankendrive" as there are wires sticking out of a small aluminim box that holds the guts, and a cord to a severed USB cable that I spliced onto the board to make it work.
What the hell, it only cost me $15 in Taiwan, for that price I wasn't about to get all worked up if it broke the way I've treated it. Now it performs desk duty at the house...

Thanks Fellas,

I will try this out and see what happens, If all else fails I will have to recover the info from her hard drive. So I will be squeezing the Jump Drive. LOL
