Well, I'm sure it works in conjunction with the stability control to brake at maximum force while still maintaining grip in a corner. But it sure looks like it needs a little more calibration to me!

There a very long story behind that incident. The man at fault was fired from his job . . . and he wasn't even a Mercedes-Benz employee!
This system does not work in areas completely surrounded by metal (obviously). So the journalists who organised this demonstration had a wood plank placed at the point where the driver had to brake in order to stop in time. Yes, they were trying to fake the whole thing and it backfired on them.
If any of you have driven an S-class, you know that its air suspension won't let you feel any kind of wood plank placed on the road. The driver didn't feel the marker so he just crashed without braking.
So after some fire at Mercedes, it became clear that it was the television station and the journalists' fault for not following Mercedes protocol. As Clarkson would say, You vern't zupposed zu do zhat!
Technology like this is put into the S-class because it is a car that is meant to be relaxing to drive. That car has so many conveniences that it takes many of driving hassles completely away. It is relaxing but it handles like crap.
It's ridiculous how many driving aids are in today's cars. One reason being that the cars are so powerful now that most drivers can't handle it. (Take the Lexus IS350 as an example.)

I think it's a rediculous idea. Say you go into a tight corner hard and that thing activates because it senses whatevers off the shoulder as being in front of you. The braking would cause the car to lose control in the corner and you'd be really screwed. I'm sure it sounds great on paper, but if it activates in enough time to stop in an emergency situation that radar has to be extending out 100+ feet depending on speed. This could cause far too many problems with other situations.

it would bring an element of surprise to driving as when it brakes and the semi truck behind you rolls over your mersades at 75 mph with the truck driver laughing at the idiot in front of him who cant drive. of course he probably wouldnt know about the auto braking devise until after they scraped the mersades off the blacktop--HAHA!!!
