Last night a new buddy of mine brought over his car. This car happened to be the R&D EVO test car for his company's Phoenix Turbo and Peak Boost. So we went for a little ride to my friends hookah bar in tempe and that 10 minute ride was insane. No BS, the car went from 75-80 to 135 in about 2 to 3 seconds, and was incredibly stable. The turbo was so loud the 3 inch exhaust couldn't be heard from 3k to 8k rpm. Now my dad has a 12 sec. vette that I have driven many a time and it doesn't hold a candle to that evo. So hopefully in 5 years after I graduate pharmacy school I can have one of my own, but for now a peak boost built l28et should do me just fine = )

They're AWESOME cars.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Most people think Neons, WRXs, EVOs, or just about any rally car you could find are butt ugly. I tend to disagree with most of them. I like the look of rally cars. At first I was like everyone else and just hated the looks entirely, but after being around them for a little while they sort of grow on you.

it's not surprising that 85zx and datto agree on something. seems you guys are always the first to scream rice and call people names.

I drove a Subaru STI about a year ago, and it was pretty quick. On par or faster than my slightly modded Z.. but they are fugly.
I would drive one, but the SO wouldn't like to be seen in something so hideous.

Style is something I generally take into account when looking to buy a vehicle.....oh yeah and reliability because we all know that neither subaru or mitsubishi have been known for that.

You'd have to be running a massive massive turbo at only 15psi to make 750whp on a 4g63 :) Most of those guys making that kinda power are running high 20s in the boost numbers, but a lot of the guys like Buschur and Sheperd don't use NOS, at least I know Buschur hit lots of his super fast times all turbo and no bottle.

Nitro is more commonly associated with Nitromethane when in relation to cars, not Nitrogen.

Over this way we got evo's right from the the evo 1, and they are such a common car and with a few running 9's or better i think they should be respected. The workshop that tunes my GTiR has the worlds fastest evo, ran a 8.30 just after christmas, not sure if it did a better time today, but the Rayglass Datsun 1200 ran a 7.95 and a 8.88 for the Lawton rotorsport quad rotor mazda sp20, havent heard any times for the GTR's as yet.

I don't know I'm sorta evo fan wouldn't mind having one out of all the sports car out there right now. I mean its got 4 doors and can blow the doors off most cars out there.
If you think can run a stock or mildly modified evo then I guess you can say it sucks but until then... that 4G63 is amazing I know some eclipse guys that just add bigger turbo, injectors, 20 psi boost, and SAFC and are already doing 13s or 12s.

Hell, as far as I'm concerned, if a car's gonna weigh over 3000 lb. it may as well HAVE 4 doors anyway! Disparage them as econobox pizza delivery cars all you guys want, but they are pretty fast on a road course (STi's, too), way faster'n 350Z's.

It's all about the AWD launch and keeping the engine up in the correct RPM range and not being afraid to redline the car so that turbo can breathe. Those kids probably got those cars from their parents or saved their hard earned money to purchase one, and were afraid to drive it like they stole it. They were probably counting on the cars bad ass powerplants and drivetrains to propel them into the 13s and low 14s and such, and forgot all about having to DRIVE to 13s and low 14s :)
If only they'd invest in some of the cheap power adders that are readily available for the Evo or STI, they'd be pushing some respectable times too.

What you "can" strap on to get more power is irrelivant... I could totally lose to whoever, I can't go ahead and say "oh if I had some bs mod on my car you wouldn't stand a chance" That means nothing on the day does it?

I was at an autocross last septemeber, and there was an EVO that beat every car in the feild. Only mods were a cat-back, sticky tires, and a computer re-flash. Might have been the driver more than anything but the other cars in the feild included a Lotus Elise, WRX STi, VW R32, C5 corvette, and Honda S2000.
I still think they are ugly, not so much from the back and font but from the side.

Yep, I wouldnt have belived it if I didnt see it with my own two eyes.
That guy was pushing his EVO to the limits, he was cornering on three wheels, even through the slalom. The fat old guy in the Elise probably could have run harder, if he drove it hard he would have beaten the elise. The elise guy claimed he hadent done an autocross in 20 years. Judging buy the way the EVO guy drove, the fact he changed from his everday steet tires before the event tells me he's somewhat of a autocross junkie. So I guess it did come down to the drivers.

While I don't disagree with either of you two, the fact that you just say the Evo sucks, and neglect to provide a good reason as to why they suck, makes you look like you have two-digit IQs and that your parents are siblings.
I go pick up my rally blue '05 STi this Friday. I can't wait. There are so many debates and discussions about the EVO vs. STi, it's not funny. The 4G63 has more mod capabilities than the EJ25 but,
I highly dislike Mitsubishi. I have always known their reliability to be very questionable. It is a reason that I wouldn't buy the EVO, which is a magnificently performing machine otherwise.

Matt, I saw an episode of Top Gear this morning where they did a review of the EVO VIII MR. They had Clarkson behind the wheel of the MR and he was chasing a Lambo Murcielago (driven by a former GT driver) around their race course at the old airfield and stuck right on the Lambo's bumper the whole course...until the guy driving the Lambo spun out. I do not care one bit for Mitsubishi but I will most definitely have to give props to this car. Where Lambo is concerned, I'd say this is a bit of an embarrassment for them. So I'd say a regular EVO would have the capability of keeping up with an Elise.
In addition, Subaru might want to get their head out of their ass and figure out what they are going to do about this.
A stock STi (probably not even the ESX) is not going to keep up with that!

Dont get me wrong, Im sure the STi is a real rocket and I personally never said the machine itself is crap just the drivers of these cars themselves. Big generalization but an accurate one. I'm sure the Mitsu scene in the U.S is far more respectable than here in Australia but when I see nothing but stock NA's riced out like 9sec 1/4 mile racers you just cant help but laugh at those fools. Here the flavour of choice for ricers is WRX, Lancer, Supra...

Comparing and EVO, Neon or any of these cars is like comparing apples to oranges. My 200sx(SE-R) is just as fast as my old 280zx(NA). Granted I loved my Z. I want another when I have the money saved up. However new cars are made with more horsepower. You can buy a 4 door sentra with more horsepower stock then some old sports cars had.
My point being the Z was a great car in it's time. It has some guts to still be kicking against some new cars. I much prefer a Z. However if I had the money to make my 200sx into a sleeper I would do it. But that's much more money, time, effort and then I still have the looks of a 200sx. When I would buy a Z, that is damn sexy and when I get more money upgrade it. I know new cars will be faster than me. However I'm the one with a Z and not a Neon that I can find 20 of at my school.

they aren't all srt 4's but they're are at least 20. Jetta's and civics are all over too. I know of 2 WRX as well. My Z could be any of the neons up to the speed limit I found on the street with out much problem. I really want to go to a track.... I'll wait till I get a Z again though.
I hate my school... I should take a picture at post it sometime of the parking lot. It's actually funny to see.

FWIW, in the link I gave above where the Evo beats a Z06 by a few seconds at NHIS in Showroom Stock, the Z06 driver is a former club champion. Heck, he's even gone faster than *I* have at Watkins Glen!
Note that I never said the Evo was BETTER, but hanging with and beating a competently-driven Z06 around a road course is something that most stock cars aren't capable of doing no matter WHO is driving it.
Proper credit where due. The Evo is a fast car around a road course.

If you watch that show Top Gear, they had a Lamborghini vs Evo8 around their short track with some nice straights and some tight corners and the Evo8 kept pace. It wasnt there to beat it, but it made up ALOT of ground in the corners. Gotta love that AWD. EVO8 should do great agains a vette.

I saw that episode too. The Murcielago driver was supposed to be a former pro GT driver as well. But, keep in mind that that was actually the Evo MR FQ400 (with 400HP). Yeah, it wasn't there to beat it but it DID keep up with it, both in the straights and the corners until the Lambo eventually spun out. I personally think that's a bit of an embarrassment for Lambo anyway. And the Lambo was AWD too, FYI.
Now, the only thing that Lambo, Ferrari, etc. can claim with their cars, is that they have a lot of money. Now, anyone that can afford the Evos and STis can go just as fast as them...in four-door econoboxes. Shameful.
