!@#$% motor!!!
Question:
Everything WAS fine and dandy with my car until knock knock who's there? well I guess some new bearings now. so while I'm doing that I can find out how the previous engine builder got 215lbs comp. per cylinder. I just hope the previous builder diddn't go too radical. The engine runs strong but I can only aford 92octane gas which the engine doesn't like. So right now I run at 60 degrees retard timing. If I don't run that much retard timing I get major Pinging. My guess is that the head was shaved, but I dunno. The engine gets pulled on Saturday to answer all the questions. I just hope I don't have to get any machine work done. Personaly I would go back to a stock engine. I built 1 about 12 years ago (stock) and I still have it. Damn thing runs like a rolex...6 cars later. I'm not partial to high compression engines, too touchy. Any suggestions while I'm doing a rebuild?? I do plan on getting a lighter flywheel and mabe doing some head porting..wish me luck.. Yup I found it in a junkyard and made it look Sweet ;-) Answer:
Ummm, what head and block are on it? More than likely the head has been ported if the engine was already rebuilt for performance. I suggest checking your cam lift and duration. If it's stock you definetely need to get a performance cam for that kind of compression. If the head has been shaved get a 2mm steel head gasket. They're pricey, but you want to bring your compression down to a maintainable level. Check the head chambers and see if the valves have been unshrouded, usually it's done when you port the head, but you never know what the previous person did. With that kind of compression you may not want a lightened flywheel. It will make your engine very rev happy, which is nice, but it makes it difficult to maintain a speed while cruising. You could end up going from 60-80 and not realize it until the blue lights are flashing in the rearview. Mostly just clean it up, make it straight and have fun! ______________________________________________________________________________ 77 280Z - TEC3 Engine Management, Coil Packs, 3.1 Stroker, 550CC injectors, tripple throttle body FI intake, MSA Stage II Cam, etc...etc... 79 Fairlady - Rusty 81 280ZX - DD Answer:
60 degrees retarded timing? damn, what's the point in retarding it to fire AFTER tdc anyway? you must be pulling our collective legs with that one. that is funny. 79 280ZX -The best selling sports car of all time Post Edited (Jan 26, 6:23am) Answer:
tkr-I didn't want to dwell on that. Just need to get to the point of the whole thing. If he'd of given us his head and block casting numbers we could be a little more helpful. Then again, being that it was rebuilt for massive compression previously, there's really no telling what's been done until the head comes off. ______________________________________________________________________________ 77 280Z - TEC3 Engine Management, Coil Packs, 3.1 Stroker, 550CC injectors, tripple throttle body FI intake, MSA Stage II Cam, etc...etc... 79 Fairlady - Rusty 81 280ZX - DD Answer:
that is info that he did give (and it's bloody important). after retarding ignition to 0 deg tdc, any further retarding it will NOT make a difference in "pinging". no matter what the compression is before TDC, lighting it 60 later is just assinine. maybe his cam or dizzy is way, way, out of whack? Answer:
Now that is possible, but I was trying to stick with his questions about what to look for when rebuilding. If he was 180 out on the dist wouldn't running advanced 60 be more like running way retarded if it was right? Just curious, I'm not real sure on how that would work. I skimmed that section of that book. ______________________________________________________________________________ 77 280Z - TEC3 Engine Management, Coil Packs, 3.1 Stroker, 550CC injectors, tripple throttle body FI intake, MSA Stage II Cam, etc...etc... 79 Fairlady - Rusty 81 280ZX - DD Answer:
he has to LOOK (and measure) everything anyway when rebuilding(duh). he should also figure out timing before blaming the "!@#$% motor". nuf said. 79 280ZX -The best selling sports car of all time Post Edited (Jan 26, 9:58am) Answer:
F54 block n47 head thats all i know. The timing thing is a guess cuz I cant even read its"official" position. I turned it counter clockwize all the way-even the sub plate too. I was thinking that the previous owner mabe tried to rebuild the dizzy and made a mistake. I have another z car and might swap dizzys out just for kicks. I will be posting cam\crank\valve\rod\piston information along with pix on this saturday 1-28-2006. as of right now the cylinders are all at 215lbs comp, and yes I used another guage thinking that mine was goofed up - same readings. nice pressure though. also it pulls 17psi vacuume at idle. Duh I just remembered that I took pix of the cam last time i adjusted the valves. The cam is stamped E30. Yup I found it in a junkyard and made it look Sweet ;-) Answer:
mabe I should use the search before I post dum stuff. E30 is just the casting number I guess I gota look at the back side of the cam to find out what it actualy is........ Yup I found it in a junkyard and made it look Sweet ;-) Answer:
In this post Piper mentions the E30 cam as the stock cam on an L24. ______________________________________________________________________________ 77 280Z - TEC3 Engine Management, Coil Packs, 3.1 Stroker, 550CC injectors, tripple throttle body FI intake, MSA Stage II Cam, etc...etc... 79 Fairlady - Rusty 81 280ZX - DD Z32 Tranny on L28 block.
