240z made #64 out of top 100
Question:
But who cares what the UK thinks anyway. http://www.channel4.com/4car/100-greatest/results/70-61.html ........................................................................................................ '74 260Z '88 300ZX GLL Answer:
yah i can think of a few more american cars that were just as special. I would've put a Saleen s7 #1 before the McLaren F1. The Enzo is better than the F40. Corvette so far down?!! I think not. The z32 made C&D's top 10 list all 6 years it was imported to the US, I would think it should be in there somewhere too. The volkswagon bus should have never even been on a list of cars being considered, let alone made it onto the list. The list sucks. No supercar should be on such a list because they aren't a huge achievment. They're made for the super rich to show off, not that I would mind having one. Most respectable publications will put a 240Z in the top 10. I wonder why the Jeep is 33 while above it are Land Rovers and Range Rovers. The Jeep was put together in 30 Days, Won WWII, created the SUV, and remains essentially the same forty years later. A focus would never make the list, the F40 would be a laughable fluke, and the Jeep would be the top off-road vehicle. This list is a joke. The british automotive press hates american cars. Anybody who's seen a couple episodes of "Top Gear" can tell you that. Your list of 3 should include a 4th: The P51 Mustang. It was the first allied fighter that had enough range to escort the 8th Air Force B17s all the way to Berlin. ........................................................................................................ '74 260Z '88 300ZX GLL Answer:
irrelevant. after d-day you did not need long range fighters in europe (and the war in the pacific did not need them either). Answer:
So what do you think happened during 1943? At one point, the 8th AF almost suspended daytime boming due to unsustainable losses of B17s to Luftwaffe fighters. Once the P51B become operational, B17 losses plummeted and by D-Day, Thunderbolts and Typhoons were free to ravage German ground forces—unopposed by the LW. P51Ds continued escorting 8th AF bombers to Berlin right up to the end of the war. That makes the P51 quite relevant. " ...the Germans failed to gain air dominance over Great Britain. Without air dominance they were unable to secure their aims. Eventually, the Allies turned the table on Germany. In the Combined Bomber Offensive they conducted strategic attack on Germany and slowly beat the German Air Force into a position of air inferiority and ultimately, air paralysis. Once that was accomplished, the outcome of the war was inevitable." "At one point, the 8th AF almost suspended daytime boming due to unsustainable losses of B17s to Luftwaffe fighters" firstly, quoting from an artilcle about drinking with a ghost is a bit odd. secondly, daylight bombing in mass formations caused insane losses, approacing suicide. everyone else knew that. the p51 was "usefull" only by making the TACTIC work better. it was relevent mostly in the context of fixing the flawed use of air power by the u.s. forces. lastly, at least the britts got it right with their bomber command. they did not suffer the illusion that a plane is a "fortress" like the u.s. leaders did. the u.s. tactics of making planes march into battle in broad daylight reminds me of pre-ww1 tactics of land battles. troops marching straight ahead in square patterns results in a waste of good men. 79 280ZX -The best selling sports car of all time Post Edited (Jan 24, 2:05pm) Answer:

You are now entering the world of hindsight/armchair tactitian. The fact remains, in that era the armies with air superiority won their battles on the ground. Ever wonder how allied forces landed on D-Day without so much as a whimper of opposition by the LW? "With the directive of the 8th Air Force commander, Lt. Gen. “Jimmy” Doolittle, to primarily use escort fighters to engage Luftwaffe fighters, the USAAF dominated the skies over Western Europe. This paved the way for the Normandy invasion and, when Supreme Allied Commander General Dwight Eisenhower landed, he pointedly observed that, “If I didn’t have air superiority I wouldn’t be here.” The war in Europe ended with the Allied and Soviet ground offensives of 1945 and the simultaneous collapse of the German war economy from heavy bombing." Spits, P38s and P47s got their share of LW kills, but it was the P51 that took the battle straight into the heart of Germany and the LW. With that, I bid you adieu and we shall agree to disagree. "You are now entering the world of hindsight/armchair tactitian. " lol, no, i'm just saying the britts were not stupid enough to fly in daylight in formation. and speaking of learning from the britts, where do you think that the p51 came from? or it's engine? "Spits, P38s and P47s got their share of LW kills" lol, the p47 share was MORE than the p51. the top aces in the 8th flew p47's. p47's are the ones that pulled escort duty AND then did ground attack on the way home (down low where the p51's wing was less effective and it's radiator would catch ground fire). 79 280ZX -The best selling sports car of all time Answer:

The problem with the P-47 was it's range. Why do you think they MADE the P-51? No other fighter had the range to escort the B-17s and that's why we lost so many.
