Wheel vibration
Question:
I almost sold my Elise because of a wheel vibration. It felt like a harmonic if I drove for a long time at a constant high speed. I paid to get my wheels high speed balanced ( a few grams were added), pressure checked, bolts retorqued. then I went back to the deal to complain again. My dealership actually moved and there is a new service department, lucky me. The guy rechecked everything and the issue turned out the wheel alignment was out and there was way to much toe. Once they corrected the alignment, the car was perfect. I still feel some road noise but nothing like before. Have your dealer check the alignment for you.
Answer:
Thank you for sharing your experience. The dealer sent the car out for alignment twice when the second set of tires were put on. When I take the car back I hope they will thoroghly investigate all possibilities such as alignment, suspension, perhaps a problem with the hubs, rotors, wheels, tires, etc... I keep hearing about wheel/tire balance but, each time the wheels/tires seem to be in balance. Being the third set of front tires I am starting to think there is something else going on. Perhaps it is something so small it is difficult to detect. Whatever the case may be this is driving me crazy and my patience is running on empty.

Still looking for the problem to be solved. Went out for about a 100 mile drive this morning with a fun group. I have the new AO48's on my car and it is noticeably better. However, I still get vibration or wheel shimmy. It is intermittent. It's almost exclusively at higher speeds. This all just makes me wonder if the new tires are masking a problem which inevitably will return as it did before. The car will go to the dealer next month. This is so irritating. Dealing with this since new has really taken a lot of the fun out of the car.
Answer:
My new Exige had a vibration at speed - all the wheels were out of balance - fixed the problem by rebalancing. One of my new 911s had a vibration in the steering wheel at speed (80mph+), and multiple wheel balances did not fix it. Finally, I had all the wheels balanced with a Hunter "road-force" machine. The road force can find a bad tire. They determined one of my REAR tires (Bridgestone in this case) was out of round. Replaced the tire and problem fixed. Answer:
raygr, I wish it were that simple for me. I have done all of the mentioned and still not solved.
Answer:
Have you tried mounting your wheels&tires on someone else's Elise and mount their wheels&tires on your car followed by a test drive? This would eliminate any question on wether it is in the tires and wheels or not.I am sure the dealed has done this: Have you jacked the car up and checked for play in the front and rear tires? Jack up one side at a time, get the tires in the air and grab it. It should not move back and forth very much when twisted in the toe in/out or camber direction. A last ditch effort would be to check your shocks. I had a truck that had less vibration after I put new shocks on it with no other changes. Answer:
AZReason, Thanks for the tips. These are very good suggestions. Perhaps the dealer will put on a different set of wheels and tires for me. I agree, this would confirm if it's wheel and tire related.
Answer:
Fox valley motors replaced my steering rack and fixed this problem. It was evident in my car after only 500 miles. Tried balancing, alignment, and tires nothing helped until the stering rack was replaced.
Answer:
Did changing tires make any difference? It seems to lessen the vibration/shimmy temporarily.
