Stan: fix found for the 'metallic rattle'?
Question:
When I took my seats out I found the motherf*ckinarseb*ggeringtossbracketbolt... that the Lotus boys so kindly threw in as they shipped my car.So far... so good though I'm sure there will be another lurking somewhere. Answer:
When I took my seats out I found the motherf*ckinarseb*ggeringtossbracketbolt... that the Lotus boys so kindly threw in as they shipped my car.So far... so good though I'm sure there will be another lurking somewhere. How do you REALLY feel about that bolt? Hope this was your total fix.. I do not think thats what is going on in my case...Dealer speculation (only speculation) is leaning toward a shifter cable issue...but until Lotus identifies ..nothing will happen at dealer level. R&D is not suppose to happen at dealer level.Either is experimentation.. Answer:
When one of my rear diffuser bolts first came loose, I thought I was going to lose the whole car! Check that for sure, easy fix. I should know-I lost a bolt, ordered two more, and have since tightened them twice more. Next time I'm loctiting those suckers. On the door rattle, can't you take the door panel off and see what's happening? I'm learning, very quickly, that owning a Lotus means you'd better be prepared to get your hands dirty. And I find it actually fun and liberating to be able to fix things. Don't be afraid to take and peak and see what YOU can do. Oh, most of my "fixes" are actually mods I decided to do, but not all of them. Answer:

No door ratle at my end.I do appreciate the directio re: diffuser bolts.I am on way back to dealer today for headlight alignment and will ask them to take a look as possible fix to rattle..Thanks Answer:
..well, thats what Lemon Laws are for. <...> I am filing Motor Vehicle Defect Notification...(with regrets)
Hate to break the news, but Lemon Laws and such are usually only for safety related problems - brakes, steering, fuel lines, etc. A "noise" does not qualify.Best thing is to try to figure out what is causing the rattle and see if you can fix it. You may not like doing this, and feel that it shouldn't be that way, but that's part of the reality of owing a Lotus. Answer:
Not neccesarily. The rules specify any problem that hasn't been fixed in a certain number of visits or that cuase it to be in the shop a certain amount of time. It doesn't have to be safety related. I think laws like that basically suck, but a friend of mine had his Evo replaced because the CEL kept coming on and they couldn't get it to stop. But seriously, for a noise? You do realize what you bought, right? Answer:
where can I find the rear diffuser bolt? I assume if I go under the car I will see a bolt holding the diffuser to the chassis?THanks Answer:

You do realize what you bought, right? When we looked in to it, it had to be for safety related problems (and I suspect emission related problems are now included) - or total number of days in the shop for repairs. It doesn't sound like safety related, and it isn't in the shop because ... Answer:

You do realize what you bought, right? ----------------------------- The noise is annoying but not the primary concern..I am surprised you think I would take this so seriously if it were only A noise. The noise/rattle/vibration is being caused by SOMETHING that noone can explain..It is not loose bolts or lack of insulation. I don't think it is unreasonable to expect a remedy for something that is so obviously wrong. FYI..a tech that worked on car today (drove car) immediately shared my concern and is eager to get into it.(leaning toward issue with shifter cables..speculation only at this time) I am not an uninformed consumer with unreasonable expectations,,What surprises me is that you are quick to dismiss this as a simple noise even though you have not experienced the problem...Keep an open mind and give others a little credit.I do not enjoy chasing this NOISE...believe me. Thanks for your input. Answer:

I haven't removed them myself, but there are a whole bunch of bolts holding the diffuser and undertray. You can easily see some of them with the car on the ground. This should give you an idea:http://www.hangar111.com/shop/limite.../moreqrud1.htm I'm optimistic that my rattle is caused by loose bolts. Answer:
Yeah, the diffuser has around 7 bolts that should be checked once in awhile. They are 8mm I believe. Another bolt that can come loose is sticking out of the side panel behind the side sills. The doors connect with it when they close. My passenger side was rattling like crazy until it was tightened. Answer:
Had an instructor almost soil his pants when the suspension bottomed out at a trackout point. When I shouted to him it didn't help much. From page 135 of the Owners Manual: "You have purchased a hand built vehicle in which most of the engineering effort has been spent on performance related systems. Please expect to encounter fit, finish and rattle issues in excess of what other manufacturers may provide. If these issues prove to be too much for you feel free to trade this vehicle for that Boxter you admired so much." Answer:

Why do people at this forum keep misspelling Boxster so often? In fact, I see the misspelled version "Boxter" more than the correct spelling = "Boxster", with a "s". (You can verify the proper spelling at Porsche's web site.) BOXSTER There, got that off my chest. Answer:

While there are bolts holding on the main and forward undertrays, there are only two bolts to really be concerned with for the diffuser itself. They are spaced between the wheels, sort of. The rest of those 5 mm screws generally do not come loose because of the locking system they are received into. The undertray doesn't get the kind of vibration the diffuser itself gets because of it's proximity to themuffler and engine, hence I've never heard of an undertray bolt coming loose yet. Oh, yeah-the diffuser is the shaped piece (not flat) under the car in the back, for you newbies, hence it "diffuses" the air flowing under the car. Water in lamps.
