Not that it matters but is it an "Elise motor" if it does not have the Lotus ECU? Originally posted by chrisngrod So I guess I don't have a Celica motor becuase my ECU, exhaust and intake are different also :-(. What do I have? I'm not sure many people will understand what a 2zz is. Uh oh I think I'll have to compare it to the Elise, Exige, Matrix, Vibe GT, Corolla, XRS or Celica GTS. Different years of the Celica had different redlines. It wasn't always impossible to hit lift on the 1st-2nd gear shift. There are hardly any people with the 7800 redline (02 and up I believe) that can stay in lift, but many with the 8400 redline (00-01) that can. You're right we don't have Lotus ECUs. I for instance have an Apexi Power FC. I hit lift at 6000 rpms and it disengages at 5800. My redline is 9050 rpm. I don't think I'll have any problems hitting lift . As people begin heavily modifying their Elises they're going to get rid of your beloved Lotus ECU. I just want a nice piece of plastic in that engine bay. Look at the chaos already. you can call your engine whatever you want. sounds like you're experiencing a complex of sorts. who cares if you have a celica engine or an elise engine. you can be proud of your mods that give you all those extra revs and horses. most people will look at the car and say you own a toyota and that is that. you can drop a ferrari engine in your car but when it's sitting at the curb everyone still sees a toyota. no disrespect, but my post was intended to point out that just because you put plastic Lotus valve covers on your car does not mean you have a Lotus engine. If anything, I tell everyone that I have a Toyota motor in my car... Originally posted by raggedy1 If anything, I tell everyone that I have a Toyota motor in my car... If they ask that is what I tell them I say get that piece of Lotus plastic, paint it body color and proudly display it! It would look great on your MR2. Originally posted by raggedy1 according to R&T mag, "...the only major changes are a revised intake system, different exhaust and a Lotus-tuned ECU." So putting the Elise valve covers on does not get you an Elise motor. Your list of mods would be inaccurate regardless if you're making more HP or not. also, the Lotus 2zz hits the 2nd cam at 6200 vs the Celica's 6400 rpm changeover. This allows the Elise to stay on the 2nd cam when shifting at redline (and let's remember that the ECU allows visits to 8500 rpm which is 500 rpm over the listed redline). The Celica would drop out of the 2nd cam even when shifted at redline - a big complaint from the moment the car was released to the market; Lotus' ECU has cured this problem. Well, I have "a revised intake system, different exhaust" and an upgraded ECU. My cam change is at 6000rpm and I can more than visit 8500rpm, I can fly right past it! But no, putting the engine plastics (not valve cover) on doesn't make it an "Elise motor". But buying an Elise didn't get you an "Elise motor" either... it's a Yamaha (not Lotus or Toyota). However others (apparently like you) don't understand that, and Elise motor is a closer reference point to the layman of what my engine is. I show my car and in that arena "Lotus" gets "elitist" points just like here. Hell having the lettering facing the right way will get points even if it doesn't say Lotus. Mods hmm... lets start with the engine and tranny swap, done myself (one of the first). Then, I have a custom short ram cold air intake (I think one of the only ones with the correct inside diameter and vanes, also self made). A custom high flow, catless exhaust, 7.5lb flywheel, LSD, eurethane filled motor mounts, cryogenically tempered oil pump gear (if you guys don't know why you'll soon find out), power fc and lots of lightening mods that the Elise won't have to worry about. All the work done on the car has been done by me except the exhaust (I don't have a pipe bender). Come Jan. I will also have a P&P head good to 9000rpm. Then all of it (engine and tranny) will be cryogenically tempered. From which I've seen as much as a 20% increase in hp, especially on high reving engines. Suffice to say I have enough to make a new Viper crap when he thought he was playing with me and I started walking away. No, I didn't beat him (it's 500hp for god's sake), but as he said he had to check to make sure he was pushing the gas. As I said, I didn't come here for any kind of my cars better than your car BS. I came here because I thought this would be a likely place to find some parts I am looking for. If putting a couple Elise parts on my car is wrong I don't want to be right! thanks for listing your mods. Quite impressive. the engine is designed by Yamaha, is it not, but built by Toyota? Frankly I don't give a hoot. As I said earlier, I tell everyone it's a Toyota motor. Am I going to mod it? Nope - I'm happy just the way it is... You and the other Toyota owner seem to have some issues in reading your postings. Lighten up. I bought the 85 mr2 when it was first released and a 91T and 92T (which I owned for over 13 years). I was perfectly happy owning a Toyota, but why does it seem like you guys have issues with it? Originally posted by Ditto But no, putting the engine plastics (not valve cover) on doesn't make it an "Elise motor". However others (apparently like you) don't understand that, and Elise motor is a closer reference point to the layman of what my engine is. I The "layman" has no idea what an Lotus Elise is I should know I get asked every day The bottom end is made by Yamaha. You can see their logo on the side of the motor (the Celica ones at least). I don't have a complex. You just have a problem with other people daring to place a Lotus piece on a Toyota apparently. If people ask you what type of motor it is you could say 2zzge of course. It's nicer to give them an answer they can understand. Dare to start a conversation with someone that can't afford a Lotus. Unless you want to be a prick. Yes you state you meant to show no disrespect, but you previously state that I seem to have a complex of sorts. Actually when people look at my car they generally have no idea what it is... So I guess you're wrong there too. What I tell people is that I have a Celica motor. It's the same one they're using in the new Elise. Now can we all just get along. I'm sorry that I wanted to make the swap look complete. I was even thinking about getting that carbon fiber valve cover with no Lotus badging, but it's terribly expensive and borderline ricey. Any of the cheaper stuff made for the Celica just replaced their stock plastics. Again it has upside down lettering and covers the wrong areas in my application. No prob Miguel. I came to Elise Talk hoping that this whole community of 2zz owners could mingle and come up with ways to improve their vehicles (interior/exterior/performance). I'm also members of Spyderchat and Newcelica.org. Stan had the right idea when he came to the NC.org forums and introduced himself in a polite manner. sounds like you're experiencing a complex of sorts You mean the "I paid $30,000 more for my car so it has to be better" complex. I say get that piece of Lotus plastic, paint it body color and proudly display it! It would look great on your MR2. Thanks James, I thought so too! Ditto-I have the exhaust only, from the cat back. That's it. Surferjer, thanks but I really want to get the whole thing. I like what I have from the cat back already. Sorry if I caused any trouble, I was just pointing out what others didn't realize. No problem here Miguel, I saw the point of your post. I do have the plastic from the Celica but as Chris pointed out the lettering faces the wrong way. You and the other Toyota owner seem to have some issues in reading your postings. Lighten up. Oh did we misinterpret this Do you guys know where I can pick up a triple tiered wing (maybe 4 or 5' tall?) and some TYPE-R NAWS stickers for my Elise? and weren't you starting the my car better than your car bs with also, the Lotus 2zz hits the 2nd cam at 6200 vs the Celica's 6400 rpm changeover. This allows the Elise to stay on the 2nd cam when shifting at redline (and let's remember that the ECU allows visits to 8500 rpm which is 500 rpm over the listed redline). The Celica would drop out of the 2nd cam even when shifted at redline - a big complaint from the moment the car was released to the market; Lotus' ECU has cured this problem. the engine is designed by Yamaha, is it not, but built by Toyota? Block is stamped Yamaha. The "layman" has no idea what an Lotus Elise is I should know I get asked every day as do I nearly every time I drive my Spyder, but saying they have no idea what it is sounds a little elitist don't you think. actually I've already said I don't care what you put in your car, or for that matter what you tell people you have under your hood. I have no problem with Toyota's as I've owned them all my driving life. I started posting just to point out that just because you (actually Ditto) puts a Lotus valve cover on your car doesn't make it an Elise motor. You seem to think I'm being an elitist. Give me a break. I own a car marque that is known for it's poor reliability and terrible resale values. I've owned Japanese cars all my life (still have a Honda and Toyota in the garage). If I have any elitist attitude it would be that I avoid buying/owning American cars due to their build quality, poor engineering (let's not argue about this) and pitiful resale values. It seems like you just want some sort of bragging rights, or as some say, "bling." check who posted the NAWS sticker comment - it wasn't me. my post regarding the celica not being able to hold the 2nd cam during certain shifts is stating fact, not being elitist. Funny you see my attitude as "I paid 30K more so my car is better." I'm reading your attitude to be, "I paid 30K less but I'm faster than the Elise, but boy do I really want one of those!" This forum is typically very civil in nature. This thread is degrading to the Honda forums level... let's all go enjoy our cars. i dont' give a **** about bragging rights or whose car is faster/prettier. I'm not into my **** is better than yours. Life is too short for that crap. Let's see what mods both Ditto and myself have done. I think we know a few technical specifications behind the whole thing and that an Elise valve cover doesn't make it an Elise motor. You keep on pushing that point, but it's clear we understand. We have a Toyota/Yamaha motor period. You can do whatever, but the origin is crystal. There's obviously no bling underneath my hood. With all the modifications the wiring and hoses look pretty messy. I'll have to see what I can do about that. The motor has no plastics which most modern cars do. I have a battery that resembles something out of a Power Wheels car. I think there's a difference between bling and just clean. My goal is to make my engine compartment look stock. The exterior was modified with the bodykit so it would just be unique. The SSR Competitions were purchased with weight savings in mind. Personally I believe there are a lot of better looking wheels out there. Originally posted by chrisngrod I was even thinking about getting that carbon fiber valve cover with no Lotus badging, but it's terribly expensive and borderline ricey. manner. Putting a carbon fiber cover on is rice, but putting a Lotus cover on and telling people you have an "Elise motor" isn't? Why don't you just slap the Ferrari emblem on the front of your car and be done with it? Mike, you just poured gasoline on the fire. oh, I'm an elitist so let me call it "petrol" - you just poured petrol on the fire! There's a distinct difference. If you make me a valve cover with plain plastic I'll sport it. Let's call it rice to put a Lotus valve cover on a Toyota/Yamaha motor in general . You just love to skip over other statements I've made to further your arguement. Actually when people look at my car they generally have no idea what it is... So I guess you're wrong there too. What I tell people is that "I have a Celica motor. It's the same one they're using in the new Elise." I can't believe I posted this on October 6th and we're having arguments about it now. Wait until someone wrecks their Elise and the motor winds up in an MR-S. Uh oh... They'll really have an Elise motor. Originally posted by chrisngrod There's a distinct difference and if you can't figure that out I can't see how you can afford an Elise in the first place. You just love to skip over other statements I've made to further your arguement. I can't believe I posted this on October 6th and we're having arguments about it now. a healthy argument. that's all it is. oh, and i know some very stupid people with a lot of money. The elise cost no more than a fully loaded Surburban but people seem to think the Elise is such an expensive car; it's not. Okay well let's bring it back down to the lines of a healthy arguement. You quoted me before I changed my post. I didn't want to continue disrespecting people because I felt they were trying to disrespect me. But I was also about to add fuel to the fire by saying... "Oh yeah you don't have to be smart to have money. You don't even have to have a good personality or be liked by anyone else." Like I mentioned before. I hoped this use of the 2zz in various vehicles would result in performance parts. In that I was also hoping to take the best things I saw in other vehicles and adapt them to mine. Even this little bit of plastic we're aruging over. Look at the arguement this little part has caused! Oh we can argue about the piece covering the intake manifold because I like that too. Originally posted by raggedy1 Mike, you just poured gasoline on the fire. oh, I'm an elitist so let me call it "petrol" - you just poured petrol on the fire! I'm bloody good at that, mate. Originally posted by Ditto as do I nearly every time I drive my Spyder, but saying they have no idea what it is sounds a little elitist don't you think. I am just reporting "my" personal 3 months(almost) and counting of Elise ownership, how is that elitist. Anyway moving swiftly on. I think that these MR2 guys seem to know a fair bit about the engine (sans ECU) that is in our cars and they may be able to impart some useful info to us.
