Your basic mods under $1000?
Question:

Stillen is a long time aftermarket producer for Nissans. Their customer service is spotty, but I have never had problems with them.

They are expensive, but their stuff usually works as advertised (caution, their HP numbers are very optomistic).

www.mynismo.com typically has some of the best prices on the net, but ask your dealer (especially on Nismo stuff), my dealer will match any price I can find on the web.

For first basic mods, you can't go wrong with the JWT pop-charger (around $100), and a Nismo exhaust (around $850).

The pop-charger has less peak HP increase than a CAI, but doesn't lose any in the mid range (and the peak difference is only about 1-2 HP), besides, you can easily get at the pop-charger for maintenance as opposed to the CAI which is buried behind the front wheel.

The Nismo exhaust has less HP than the Stillen (by 3-5), but its only 3 pieces compared to the dozen or so pieces of the Stillen. Also, there is no question on warrentee with Nismo S-tune parts. Nismo is much cheaper than the Stillen.

From there, spend a lot of time on multiple forums and search, search, search. There are lots of mods out there, and knowledge is you best tool in the beginning.

Your biggest shock coming from the Mustang world will be how expensize this crap is.

Have fun...

Dont forget to tell him about the biggest shock of all...
Once you spend you first 1000$ on mods, you will try to find a way to sell your little sister on ebay in order to get more mods. Its called modderitis. Its very contagious, and the only cure is to drop more money on your car. You can laugh now, and say to your self, yeah whatever, this Zelous guy doesnt know me, but I was there in your shoes before. It all started with a 110$ aftermarket grill from billet. Then comes the bolt on horsepower stuff, then comes the 3000$ 19 inch rims and tires. After the tires, you think, damn spent 4grand already, might as well spend another 5 grand and get forced induction, then then after your broke and living with your parents again, (for the 3rd time) you can finally say, what did I just do? You will catch this disease. Be prepared, lol BEN

These guys are great, check out the site. Ive made 2 purchases from them and have had no problems and the 1000's of people at my350z.com will say the same. The prices are very competitive and they have alot of products. Pretty much everything they carry is quality stuff. If you see a product you like but arent sure just ask here or do a search or venture over to my350z.com(if you want to learn about mods for the 350Z this is THE best forum to go to hands down) and read to your hearts content about mods.

As far as under $1000- check into exhausts, intakes, high flow cat converters, upper intake plenum, headers, and pulleys...lightweight wheels too, although you cant get them for under 1000, but chroming your stocks is probly just gonna add more weight.

I'd leave it stock unless you want to spend near 5 figure amounts of money to completely transform your car into a FI beast. The n/a mods alone are about as costefficient as spinners for performance. The sound and look is improved, but not much else. The only n/a mods I'd perform on the car [unless $ is of little object] is some sort of intake and test pipes.

zlover,

Not true at all. There are tons of great NA mods. There are lots of guys at my350z.com with 255-300 rwhp. Dynos to prove it to. I would say if you can get 60+hp to the rear wheels NA, then awesome. nothing wrong with that. If you want instant 350+hp to the rear wheels, FI is the only way to go. BEN

IMHO these will start the process off right...

window tint 150 to 250
radar detecter 80 to 300
short antenna 25
carbon fiber "b" pillars 60 to 80
front grille 50 to 250

after these you can start spending some serious money on exhaust, intake, wheels, etc..

NNA runs this site!!!

"There are lots of guys at my350z.com with 255-300 rwhp."

OK but they spent thousands to get a measly extra 50hp.

I wouldnt spend money on NA upgrades,

Why waste 850$ on a nismo exhaust when it's only gonna give you 3-5 more hp and ruin the AWSOME stock exhaust note of the 350Z?????

If you decide to go turbo then I would consider upgrading Intake/Exhaust since it will really impact performance (around 20hp extra for a Z32TT with any catback exhaust alone.)

ruin the stock exhaust note? I dont think so, but to each his own....also most exhausts produce 8-10hp. everyone knows NA mods are not very cost efficient on this car but i dont think that really matters. If you have the money, who cares, its a hobby. It personalizes your car. I doubt very many Z owners are modding their cars so they can make money. if it makes you feel good do it. I spent $100 on my popcharger that gives a few hp but i like the sound and the way it looks. thats about the extent of my budget but if it were more id buy an exhaust plenum and a few other goodies that would give some noticeable NA power and distinguish my Z from the rest. Man there are way too many uptight conservatives on this board. If it wasnt for modding you guys would be waiting around for the next new Z owner to ask how to put the windows down with just the key FOB...sheeesh

Mr. Zelous350Z,

255, I can believe that. Stock baseline dyno is what, high 240's? Anywhere NEAR 300whp on the 350z without upping the compression/racing fuel/nos/etc. I will deem impossible. I know of two modded 350's on a personal basis, [i rely on real evidence moreso than posts by random people who may not even own the cars; although this does not in anyway try to descredit your findings]. One has intake/exhaust/pulley/cluth/flywheel/tuned and even a bunch of cooling parts which can't hurt, he dynoed just under 265rwhp and the shop was impressed. He spent well over 4k on his car, although as i mentioned some of it was on cooling parts. The other friend has all mods besides internals/HG, test pipes, and cammed. He had 8 more peak whp than the previous 350 yet the area under the curve was almost identical. I wish I could accurately recall the tq figures but I cannot. I do not want you to get the impression I am trying to insult your knowledge/findings, but I've been in this game for many years and dyno's are easily manipulated, corrected, etc. These findings are pretty easy to believe considering Nissan itself had to do some fairly significant modifications to bring the new hp level to 300hp, yet lost torque in the process as well.

Clutch, flywheel, tuned? yeah, sure those are good to have but your missing all the important ones that these guys at my350z.com have. Im not about to waste my time and go looking for the posts over at the other z web site , but its there with dyno pics and dyno sheets to prove it.
I noticed you said something about your friends car and what he dynoed 265hp, and you list his mods, well, your leaving out the most important mods to gain the NA hp. Performance Cams, Crawford Plenum, Larger throttle body, ECU flash, headers, free flowing cats etc. Anyways, it can be done. believe it or not, I dont really care. Cheers,

Well, I don't think you know either

Answer:

Well I was thinking just performance mods for that $1000. The "look-good" stuff will be a separate budget.

Pulleys... I did that to my mustang and it ended up turning the others slower and therefore my air conditioning suffered. Stationed in the Arizona desert and living in Miami, FL - I dont think I'm ready to lose any a/c power.

Everybody here and on the other boards seem to go with Popcharger (I guess that's the intake or air filter or both?) and set of pipes for the exhaust. I would want to maintain emissions so no test or off-road pipes for me.

I've snooped around the prices and ya, its much more expensive for parts than my cheap ol Mustang. I guess intake and exhaust alone will cover my $1000 limit.

Thanks
Mike

ps oh ya did I mention I still have the Mustang for sale =) $4000, 94 GT conv 5.0, great condition, buy it now for your project car so I can buy my 350z. (it'll be in autotrader next week) Also have a 98 Accord EX but I suppose I can trade that one in at Nissan since it's near mint and stock.

after reading articles/threads/reviews/ people talking about their stuff, I'm going to order a pop charger for my '03 enthusiast, it's worth the 100 $ swing to check it out. I like the stock exhaust sound OK for now. (broke azz). Who has the NAV system? What's it like? I also want to put different speakers in. Nothing over the top at all, I just don't care for the stock system. You guys got ideas?
