Winter Story
Question:

I was heading out from Oklahoma City to go home for Christmas to Idabel, OK (small town). As I left OKC the weather was fine and the roads were clear, about 2 hours into the trip it started snowing, hard. So bad in fact that white-out was becoming a problem. At about half-way through my trip I was doing 50mph on the highway when the car suddenly started skidding left. I hit it in neutral and cut the wheels over to compensate, but it was too late. The car was in a full 360 spin, and before I knew it I was facing the grill of a Gray Chevy Silverado. Since we were on ice he couldn't actually stop, so in a quick-thinking decision, he takes the truck into the ditch missing my bumper by 2 feet. He has 4-wheel drive so he promtly exits the ditch upon passing me. However, I was still out of control, juggling the sterring wheel back and forth to try and regain control of the car. On the third spin I finally got the car to slide at a controlled angle off the road and stopped inches from a road marker as a Semi passed me. My passenger, who spent the whole time making a perfect imprint of his hand on my dashboard, was noticably shaken. We then spent the next 7 hours trying to get down the highway and were one of the EXTREMELY few people who survived the road unharmed. Every 2 miles I found someone else in the ditch, including a jack-knifed Semi. My story actually ended up in the local newspaper. According to one state-trooper, it was the worst winter storm he'd seen on the road in 17 years.

For those who know, this story took place on the Indian Nation Turnpike, South of McAlister.

Answer:

Sounds like you were extremely lucky. Those snow storms can be a real danger on the highway. Here in Chicago, we have missed major snow falls, that covered Indiana and Michigan hard. So far my Z has not seen snow yet.

wow that is a scary story! doesn't it make you piss your pants when stuff like that happens? I spun out on dry pavement and it about made me crap my pants. You might want to invest in some good snowtires if you plan on driving in the snow in the future. It is amazing how good a snow-tired rwd car can be in the snow, and how terrible it can be w/o the snow tires in the snow!

Answer:

you're an idiot! You should be thrown in jail for endangering peoples lives. Doing 50 mph in a snow storm with a 350Z? If I was the guy in the Silverado that you ran off the road, I would have kicked your ****ing ass all up and down the highway!

Answer:

hmmm....yeah, you are kind of right, but then again the Z lost control, so there's not much you can do about it.

I was actually being passed by many cars, and it was snowing, but it wasn't sticking on the road. There was no indication of ice on the road until I hit a small spot. I couldn't exit the road, this highway has an exit about once every 40 miles. I was 250 miles away from home in the middle of now-where and unannouced snowstorms in Oklahoma are as likely as a tornado in New York. There was no way of knowing, no way of stopping and no way to turn around. So pop another Ritalin and chill out, you weren't there.

Answer:

Medic165,

Do not drive your Z in the snow. I also ran into a storm in late 2002 when my PPW Enthusiast was about 4 mos old and had a couple of spinouts and had to travel about 50 miles to get home. I made it but had to leave the car in a nearby neighborhood and walk home about 1 mile. This car is not made to travel in the snow. I do not take mine out in the winter unless the skys are clear and I am not traveling too far. I normally just start it once a week and wait for spring.

Answer:

Yeah, I ran into a freak snowstorm last winter in town, in the middle of the day and spun out on around 2-3 inches of snow when I had to hit the brakes. Missed a fire hydrant by about a foot or two, and took out a row of vinyl fence in front of an insurance business. Barely scratched the Z, cost me 100 bucks for the fence, and taught me a lesson - Z no go in snow! Its been parked for 2 weeks now as central Ohio got semi=slammed with that ice storm. Forecast is for the mid 50's later this week - Yee Hah!
