PL14610 Purolator Oil Filter?
Question:
I have both PL14610 and PL14620 oil filters on my shelf. Purolator currently shows the PL14610 to be used for the 350Z, and I can't remember why I bought the PL14620, except I think they used to suggest it for the Z. They look the same. Does anyone know the difference? Thanks, Dave, '03 Touring Redline Coup Answer:

"because it's the best.......cmyk...cyan magenta yellow black" Is that what the service people tell you? Take a look at some filter tests. I know they are morotcycle oil filters, but it should give you an idea of what to look for in a filter. Answer:
i don't listen to service people , i make my own informed decisions. oh i forgot to tell you, i change my own oil and filter and would never think of asking someone at the dealership a technical question! Thats crazy talk NNA runs this site!!! Post Edited (Dec 19, 2:22pm) Answer:

The rotten part about any of these oil filters is the small size. Your engine is in bypass mode all the time since the filter cannot possibly accept the volume of oil that is being forced through it. If you remember the filters of the past that were full size they filtered all the oil all the time. The only time the bypass opened up was when the oil was cold or the filter was dirty. The Maxima filter fits the 350Z and is about twice the surface area. But, if you are wanting to keep the warranty I would suggest using the factory filter until the warranty runs out. Then you have the option of going to a larger filter and since Purolator invented the oil filter I would not object to using one. remember that they all meet the same SAE standards but the larger the surface area the mor oil the filter can handle without going into bypass mode. In bypass mode the oil is not being filtered. It seems that all manufaturers have gone to the pint size oil filters unless you are purchasing a truck... And, even some of those use the small filters. Great discussion, guys. Thanks for all the thoughts. It looks to me like the Purolator filters have anti-draining valves (1 way) in them, or else we'd see a similar time with the red light on (low pressure) when we start the car, like you do when you do a filter change, and the new filter is empty. I guess none of us know the difference between the PL14610 and the PL14620. That's really what I was after. Dave -- '03 Touring Redline Coup Answer:
I currently find only the PL14610 in Purolator's book, and on their web site, which is the reason I posted the question. I think the PL14620 used to be listed, and it's the same size as the PL14610. They don't list any applications for the PL14620 now. Maybe I'll just use them on my old Maxima. Dave - '03 Touring Redline Coup Answer:

The Subaru aftermarket community has wholeheartedly embraced the Purolator filter so I wouldn't mind giving it a try. My .02 - My cousin is Master Mechanic for Nissan of 20 years. He states WIK oil filters are a good option. They have the back flow technology. My cousin has replaced many of the pathfinder and 350Z engines with aftermarket filters that didn't do the job of oiling the engine properly. The customers were lucky because each case was oil starvation case. The bypass system is important and not needed 90% of the time. But when you get on it and the flow stays high, that is when the damage starts with a sub par filter. I mean $2 for a WIK or $5 for a Nissan filter isn't a $'s issue on a 30-35K car. I say protect your investment and warantee ..... buy the Nissan filter. Owner of 01 Pathfinder and 04 350Z. I use the factory filter. No Problems Please don't let Walmart use their standard filter on yor car. Give them a Nissan filter for them to install if you don't do your own oil changes. "Racing is life. Here's the answer. I took Mr. Motion's advise, and asked the tech help people on the Purolator site. Here's what Tom told me. Make sense? The difference between the PL14620 and the PL16410 is in the shape of the base plates of the filters. The PL14620 base plate is flat. The base plate of the PL14610 is concave. Your 1997 Nissan Maxima with the 3.0L engine was at one time cataloged to use the PL14620 oil filter, and you should use your extra stock of PL14620 filters on that vehicle. However, the introduction of the 3.5L engine which is used in your 2003 Nissan 350Z forced Purolator to introduce the PL14610 into the product line. The nature of the mounting stud and mount allows the PL14620 to bottom out before sealing properly on this engine which can result in the filter leaking as pressure increases on the filter during an oil change interval. Since the PL14610 works properly with both engines, the PL14620 was actually obsoleted from the Purolator line in 2003. Tom (Filter Hot Line) Z33 Emblem Zaino products Zaino ROCKS!
