225 and 245 A048's?
Question:
I'm planning to run A048's in 225/45/16 and 245/40/17 on my LSS wheels with spacers.

Will I have any issues? Will I get a better grip from the front tires and reduce understeer?
Answer:
Yes, the increase in front contact patch will result in more front bite - possibly too much.
You might first try removing the front camber shims. That will make any understeer go away...
Answer:
Robert

Does, the shim removal have as much a positive effect for track as it does for autocross, I have debated doing it, as I understand it makes turnin better which is great, but if the car goes into a oversteer situation that is not good for track use ,especially if u are too hot into a corner and can not correct, the factory wants understeer for saftey i guess. Do you track your car or just autox. Maybe removing half of the shims is a compromise.
Answer:
I've had the car on track without the front shims on oem sized tires and it's fine.
My preferred set-up when using the 225/245 tires is to run the bigger front bar in conjunction with the shim removal.
Answer:
Right on! Thanks Robert =)

I have all my front shims out but I still think that at times there is a bit too much understeer left in the system.

Where do I get a better front bar and how would i install it and adjust it properly since I'm no suspension wizard?
Answer:
So Robert; You're saying that runnin 225's on the front with all the shims out will give too much front-end grip resulting in oversteer? And by adding the front BWR roll-bar in hole #2 will balance the grip out properly so i can ultimately corner faster than before with the skinny 195's?

Yes.
Answer:
Cool! Sounds like I have to spend some cash soon then =)

Thank you so much Robert for your advice!

Thank him by buying his BWR ASB and tires through his site. It's a great resource to have individuals like Robert on the site that are willing to experiment and actually produce effective equipment for our cars. I had a bar before he made his, but I'll definitely be buying my next set of tires from him.

As far as front camber on the track, the more the better. If you get a chance put a pyrometer on your tires and that will most likely tell you, you need all you can get up front in the stock configuration.
Answer:
Robert do you sell the tires mentioned too?

Yes, I can offer competetive pricing on Yokohama tires.
Answer:
I don't post too often since others seem to have more answers and even questions than I do, but I have been curious about the possibility of this setup for a while.

The rolling diameters of these tires are very close to stock, each being just slightly taller so that the percent difference between front and rear is essentially the same as stock where the ABS is concerned, and perhaps most importantly they are available sizes.

I thought I saw a post where someone was running 255 rears but I don't remember what tire they were talking about. It might come down to whether AO48s fit a given setup. I'm currently running the sport pack with all the shims except the ABS bracket out.

I'm not sure what wheels are available that would work with these sizes, so I guess I'm just asking if anyone knows if the 255s would fit given an optimal wheel?
Answer:
I have been running 225 A048s in the front and am not going to do it again.
The car is to tail happy in fast sweepers and is very hard to control once you reach the limit.
I am running the Black Watch Racing Bar at the stiffest setting and have absolutely no understeer. I think I'll try the RA-1s next, unfrotunatly that means new rims. Ill run 205/235 or 245.
IMHO don't go with 225 in the front, rear clam shells are to expensive .....
Answer:
Ideal wheel widths for this combo would be 8" front and 9" rear since most radials like the wheel to be the same as the tread width (usually about 1" less than tire width). Those who run in classes requiring stock wheel widths do not have this option. You would also need custom wheels or adapters to convert to Porsche bolt pattern to get these sizes. It would have outrageous grip though. The cup cars use 190 and 230 slicks on 7 and 8 inch rims.

Try adding some more rear toe-in. And if rules don't limit you to stock sizes some more rear wheel width would help. Make sure you are careful with tire pressures and sudden lifts off the throttle. Maybe try a bit less air up front. If you need to come off the gas, leave some on. Or left foot brake if that is familiar to you.

So Robert, one more time, with this setup (225/245) on LSS rims, will we need your spacers?
Answer:
So 225/245 fit on LSS rims? The wheels seem fairly narrow for those tire widths. Wouldn't the tread tend to squirm and roll over more than it is designed too? I would think it would be harder to tell what's going on as well as have a tendency to over-steer because of the increase in front width.

I guess everything is a trade off but if you can't run wider rims is it a good idea to go this wide, especially in the front where it seems another inch and a half of rim would be ideal.

Hey Buz, or anyone else, do you know if it is even possible to make rims that would support 255s, and fit? I don't mean to derail the thread just thought someone here may have already tried 255s or know for a fact the AO48s n that size won't fit.

thanks, eric
