Outside / Exterior Rattle / Chatter; when rear wheels go over rough road

This forum has been so invaluable to me--I've found solutions or discussion for every problem I've had with my Goat, but this one problem I can't find info on.
I can hear a metallic rattle coming from outside the car (pretty audible when the windows are down and I'm not on the freeway). The noise is triggered by going over rough roads or bumps with the rear tires only. Weather does not affect it. It is not intermittent. It is most audible when my windows are down and I'm driving on echoy roads (walls nearby).
It's impossible to say for sure judging from my driver's seat, but it seems to be coming from the rear-driver's side of the vehicle. Almost sounds like jangling coins in a pocket.
It's driving me nuts and my dealer gave me an "unable to reproduce." Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance. I love this forum :)
Drive the rear of the car up on ramps, get under it and have someone else shake the exterior or bounce around the interior so you can isolate the sound.
I know it sounds kinda dumb, but you'll spend tons of money trying to fix the problem without diagnosing it first. Also, you'll need the full weight of the car on the rear tires to mimic driving conditions, so use ramps or something equivalent.
This is all I can offer until someone else chimes in.

Thanks in advance. I love this forum :) I think I know what you're talking about, you hit a pothole with your left rear wheel and get a clank/clang. Never hear with the windows up, only does it once in a while, mine seemed to do it on left turns at fairly low speeds while accelerating.
I've checked the suspension and everything appears to be Ok. I think it's the rear bushings that are deflecting, allowing the cross member to hit the plate that sandwiches the bushing on the outside. When I swap out the bushings for Pedders I'll see if that is the noise.
Thanks for the help, guys.

Also, you'll need the full weight of the car on the rear tires to mimic driving conditions, so use ramps or something equivalent. I've tried shaking the car when not on ramps and I can't recreate the noise--it seems the car needs to hit a pretty sharp road imperfection to trigger it, like running over a seam in concrete or driving on really crappy San Francisco city roads.
Fortunately the car's still under warranty so it won't be my money wasted on trying to fix it :) I just want to point the dealer in the right direction. I'm going to bring the car to them next week. I'll chime in if they figure it out.
Check the wheel chocks underneath spare.
I have the brake whine/squeel in the rear. Is this what you are talking about?
I have the brake whine/squeel in the rear. Is this what you are talking about? Nope, mine is a metallic "tink!" noise that's only triggered by sharp bumps in the road. It sounds like something is loose and bouncing around.
Check the wheel chocks underneath spare. I've read about this noise--would that be only audible with the windows down, or would I hear that through the back seat as well?
I have the exact same freaking noise, audible only with the window down, but mine seems to come from the front. Suspension noises are tricky to pinpoint due to acoustics; could be either front or back.
I described mine as a 'squeak', but your 'coins in your pocket' analogy sounds exactly like it. I obviously only hear it on the left side, but could be on the right as well. Mine are triggered by sharp bumps, but don't have to be big. There're a ton of expansion joints where I live, and my car sounds like an old clunker with my window down. Embarrassing. Add that to the 150K-mile ticking sound of my engine and I feel like I'm driving a 15-yr-old POS:gr_jest:.
It has to be in the suspension, and since we can't hear or feel it inside, I agree with the bushing theory, but the question is WHICH ONE. Hopefully 87LC2 can get back to us if his Pedders solved it. Best wishes folks.

Check the e-brake cable as well.
I've read about this noise--would that be only audible with the windows down, or would I hear that through the back seat as well? There's not much sound dampening in the GTO, so you hear it through the back seat if something is loose or not right. Try taking out the spare and adjusting everthing in there then tightening everything down snug. Than you can eliminate that as the cause if its still there.

I'll definitely check it, but since I don't hear the noise through the back seat (only hear it from outside when my windows are down) I'm guessing it's not the problem I have. But certainly worth checking :) Thanks dude.
Alright, so I opened up the spare compartment and started pushing around to see if anything made the noise I've been hearing. Sure enough, one of the chocks would make a "tink" noise that sounds awfully like the noise I've been hearing from the rear of the car. Not sure that it is the cause of the noise I hear while driving, but we'll see.
I took out the spare, wrapped both chocks in small shop towels (made sure the towel goes in the middle of the closed chocks so there's no metal-on-metal), and bolted it all back together. Shook everything around and could not elicit any noise. I'll find out tomorrow (when I go driving) if that stops the noise I've been hearing from outside the car. I'd be elated if that did the trick, but won't be surprised if it doesn't :)
mine was making a noise too,it was the left side muffler hitting the heat shield, just bent it out of the way.
I get that same noise too, I think, when I hit a hard bump going at a decent rate of speed. I can hear it with the windows up or down though. It sounds more like a 'clunk' than a 'clank'. I'll try the spare tire idea though.
Just with the sound your describing... it might be the upper strut plate. Not a sure thing but it's a very similar sound and only will be showing itself on bumps and such.

heh just a side note... but ive noticed your lug remover is shiny and the one in my car is flat black... wonder if someone painted mine...
MAF Got Eaten

I must not have had my MAF tight and it fell off the airbox and decided to rest on a pulley and the serpentine belt. The maf has some plastic worn off of it, but nothing that shows the circuit board so I think that'll be OK.
The connector however is worn down to one of the conductors on the inside of it. Does anyone know the part # and price for the connector? Also can I just splice it in or not?
There is a pigtail available and you can splice it in. That happened to me a couple years ago when I tried to run a CAI that wouldn't stay tight on the TB.
I do not remember the part number but I think it was between $10 and $20.
good deal. Thanks. I was hoping I could avoid it, but it seems the car still idles rought occasionaly and surges at low rpms under slight load.
Oh is there any way to actually test the MAF? Can I hit it with a multimeter and read resistance or something? If possible I'd still like to test it.
I Think Gm Parts Direct Has It. It Is Worth A Try At Least.
i looked and couldn't find it on their site. I didn't even see a link for intake :-/
EDIT: Found the MAF, but not the connector. Wonder if the dealership will be open on Monday
PS Looks like purple seat covers are ~50% off of MSRP though
If the MAF is malfunctioning, you'll definitely throw a code.
yea it's throwing a code. I had a "misfire" condition that was driving me nuts. It only did it every once in a great while. Then it did it on the freeway pretty good and I figured "good I bet that was enough to throw a code." Went to Autozone and saw it was for the MAF and went to look at it and it was down on the pulley.
finally got the kooks LT and bassani installed

sounds AWSOME!!! TT Performance in Passaic NJ, hooked it all up, did a really nice job and hooked me up with a good price. I have to go back and get it dynoed and tuned in a couple weeks though, didnt have time to do it all in one day.
I'll post a sound clip ASAP.
thanks to maryland speed and TTP :)
sound clip pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez
sound clip pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez +1!

Pics X50

..or so, had a chance to throw a coat of NXT on her today and the parking garage under my work will never be this empty ever again, so I had to take some shots, and I'm really glad I did, these came out GREAT!!
Thanks again to Travis for the rims, I think they help a lot in completing the look. A few more little touches here and there and she'll be done (if there is such a thing). Enjoy!

That last one there is my new desktop background.
I see swirls
Yeah, there are swirls, she's not perfect, but these pictures did her justice I think.
i like the last pic!
nice pics man!
some fine pics nice work
I see swirls You own a QSM it's a little hard to see them on your car.He own's a PBM it show's just a little.By the way just f***ing with you.:gr_jest:
We shoulda got 18's from the get go.
Awesome pics man!!!
Nice.
What camera were you shooting to take the pictures? A lot of them are soft focus or just that slightest bit out of focus. You did good capturing the correct color balance. I like the composition on a lot of them as well.
Nice work Patrick. I think I'm going to do this next week when all of SDGE is nearly empty.
Boy do we have a lot of shit to pull off our cars. LOL!
Thanks everybody!
Spice, it was my wife's Canon Digital Rebel. She set the camera up for me at home after I told her what I'd be doing with it. Some of those that are slightly out of focus were my doing, I didn't realize she set it for manual focus until I had gotten half way through my shots.
Can't wait Clarke, she'll be sitting a little lower after Christmas methinks. :D
Very sharp man!!
Wingless PBMs.... Is there anything more beautiful?
No, truly there is not. ;)
Damn nice cavalier :wall:
Wingless PBMs.... Is there anything more beautiful? Yep... a PBM with a wing :)
Nice shots.. what mode where you on? If you weren't, next time use Av, you get less of Canon's standard processing..
I think it was 1600 TV mode. I honestly don't know that camera as well as my wife does.
looks good
nice meeting you saturday
Wax question

I've used Zaino, and Meguiars
recently I found this place called chemical guys that sells some nice stuff or so it sounds and they have pretty decent prices and reviews. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with any of it.
The particular kind I was interested in is
called 5050 Paste wax
here is a picture of it, I wont list the website due to the rules but it seems like a great product for the price which is around $50
any thoughts or experience with it?
thanks in advance
I've read that it's really good and brings out the metallics very well. Quantim0 and Phantom Goat 06 know more about it.
It looks like a great bargain to me.
GTO_04
I don't know about that brand but I use Carnuba P100. I love it and it does wonders!
That wax gets rave reviews from everyone that has used it. I use a number of CG products and all have impressed me greatly. My personal favorite wax from them is the Petes '53. It look amazing on my IBM and lasts a decent amount of time too.
