Why do you have to tune a MAF?

I've been reading up on MAF, VE, etc., and I have what may be a stupid question. Why do you have to tune your MAF? Is it simply to get the calibration dialed in for yours because just a generic "one setting fits all" calibration comes from the factory?
If not, then under what conditions would you have to do it? In just my simple-minded way of thinking, once you've calibrated it, the same calibration would work no matter what you do to your n/a motor. I mean a MAF shouldn't give a rats ass what has caused the airflow intake to increase downstream...it just reports the same values.
Thanks,
Gerry
All sensors have a manufacturing tolerance. The same goes for fuel pumps, injectors, etc. This means a bone stock car "might" not be exactly right. Throw in an aftermarket CAI that changes the direction of flow in front of the MAF, then you can really get irregularities. Now run extra electrical accessories that cause a different normal operating voltage and---. You see where I am going with this.

Thank you!

mine is totally uncalibrated.... sitting on my garage shelf :D
mine is totally uncalibrated.... sitting on my garage shelf :D Lol... :slap: :gr_jest:
I've tuned a couple mafs that were off by as much as 37% on stock cars in certain cells.
Which is why tuning by PE only can be dangerous.
What if you were commanding a 13.0 and that cell as +37% Error... thats another 37% on top of the 13.0 in the lean direction, you might not get lucky enough to be able to tune around that.
It's come in my experience anytime you add a mod that changes airflow and fueling, the MAF and VE tables should be re-calibrated.
What blows my mind is how you tune MAF with only one row of cells.
What blows my mind is how you tune MAF with only one row of cells. ???
more air that crosses over the sensor, the higher the frequency response is.
What blows my mind is how you tune MAF with only one row of cells. The MAF has no references. It does not care about load or rpm.
All you need is frequency to calculate airflow. That's all the MAF is, an airflow meter.
Very simple device. Unfortunately it has limits.

I think I'm starting to understand why these things come "tuned" they way they do bone stock. Just throw some fuel at it??? That also explains why you can pick up easy HP with just a good tune.
Want to pick up (or lose) a quick $100. I haven't looked yet, but I'd bet anyone $100 my MAF settings are bone stock.

???
more air that crosses over the sensor, the higher the frequency response is. So how do I determine how much air is hitting the sensor and how do I then determine how off the MAF is?
using AFR error, if commanding a 12:1 and acheiving a 12.5:1 then you need to add 12.5/12 = 1.041666% to the values at that cell.
This is one method, there are several out there.

Popping heard from directly under drivers seat

i dont know if its just my ears but im hearing a loud popping noise when i downshift directly under my seat. ive been hearing this popping since i converted my 04 to 05 stock exhaust and added the stolen fox h-pipe and super 44 mufflers. i posted before and was told to tune my dfco but i heard the popping from the tips. now i hear the popping from under the drivers seat (around the h-pipe or mid pipes). im thinking that maybe the welds to the h-pipe arent that good and causing a leak.what do you guys think?
Maybe exhaust leak. Get under the car with it running and feel/listen around the exhaust piping, especially where it was welded. If it is leaking, you will faintly hear it and be able to feel air escaping with your hand right nex tto the pipe. Or just take it to a muffler shop let them find it and weld it.

Shifter?

Everyone,
I purchased a B&M rip shifter, however, I keep hearing they are crap. thinking on sending it back. Some poeple told me to get a hurst. what you guys think about them? here's a link: http://www.gravanatuning.com/applica...ac_GTO_LS1_LS2 with that said... will the stock leather boot in the GTO cover this shifter set up?
never used either, but I have a Billet Pro. I really love this shifter and looking at it I would guess nothing other than it being a high quality unit. I can't imagine going back to stock, i'm sure you'll feel the same way about a hurst though.
def. still haven't even driven my ride yet. I'm stationed out in Guam(military) purchased a GTO about 3 months ago and have been getting advice for mods on ls1tech. they told me about this site. likewise, they were the ones which told me to stear clear of the B&M shifter. I'll drive my car stock for a few days when I come back december 21st then I'll intall my mods and see the difference.
when you get back, i'd find a local goat herd to hang with. Find some members that will let you take a stroll with different shifters. That will give you a feel for how different ones feel.
roger that man. I guess I'll post up on local forums trying to find some goats where I live. thanx for the advice. when you get back, i'd find a local goat herd to hang with. Find some members that will let you take a stroll with different shifters. That will give you a feel for how different ones feel.
Magnaflow Catbacks on Sale at MarylandSpeed

We have had a bunch of requests to bring our Magnaflow sale back, so we are excited to extend this new offer! Even though our website "add to cart" price is very low, we have been able to find even more room to discount. Last sale, we tried posting our price publically, and some people just used it to get another $5-10 off through other vendors. Because of this, we are now asking that you PM or call for pricing. This sale will definatly make it worth your while:D
This is a great exhaust with an awesome sound, and no drone. Basically, it is the most popular GTO system on the market!
If you find a lower price, let us know, and we will match it!
Thanks!
You can view our whole line of exhaust products here-

please send me pricing. Thanks
Why do you do this to me? WHY!

This is our best price yet on the Magnaflow! PM or Call for Pricing!
do they drone with kooks lt?
lemme know
The Magnaflows are highly recommended. I really enjoy mine. Got them from Maryland speed (through one of their eBay listings). Great price and quick shipping.
For anyone wondering how easy/difficult installation is, see the link below. It was very easy to install.

Magnaflows don't drone with LT's.
Does anybody know if the catback yields a HP improvement?
I was recently thinking about switching out my maganaflow system to something with a louder reputation because I thought it was to mellow and I have had it for a year. Well that has changed because after a long hard drive through the mountains it has gotten louder but not to harsh sounding and I predict it will get better with time . Magnaflow gets my vote!!!!
Bump!

just throwing in another vote of confidence for an awesome vendor! bought my system used, but i love my Magnaflow. one of the few exhausts out there that actually has a TONE and not just noise.

But a word of caution. Mine had defective welding on the flange (on BOTH pipes) welded to the X-pipe, which bolts to the car. Didn't notice it until I checked for leaks with the car running. Had to remove it, fix it, and buy new gaskets. Not fun.
Look carefully for gaps between tube and flange before you even lift your car. Look at the X-pipe thru the flange with strong backlight (or a flashlight), and it should be obvious if you have the problem. I'd have replaced it if I had noticed that before installation, but never imagined a defect like that. And I need to say Magnaflow doesn't make this easy folks. It needs to be returned by the distributor (which wasn't MarylandSpeed), you need to pay for shipping the ENTIRE catback, and worse of all, you need to send your package first, then wait for the replacement. Not the best customer service IMO, but this kind of defect should be rare. It apparently was a bad batch.

But you can also do what I did, which was to plug the gaps from the INSIDE with 'ULTRA COPPER RTV', and reinstall. What I mean is fill the gap between pipe and flange with the RTV, and let it cure for a day before firing up the car. The weld is not as strong as it should be, obviously, but hopefully strong enough not to ever fail, due to very little stress there. But if it does, I'd just get it rewelded at a muffler shop without removal, which should be cheaper than sending the whole darn thing back. Hope this helps. Take care.

They fixed this issue 6-7 months ago. They had a batch of leaky x-pipes.
Thanks!

:coffee: I will! Haddad Motorsports will be doing the install and dyno tune. They just did my cradle alignment and rolled my fenders more. Great guys at that shop!

Or, you buy it from Maryland Speed to begin with, as they have fantastic customer service! I had the same issue, and it was made right, with some of the best customer experience I have received anywhere!
Thanks again Maryland Speed!
With the X-pipe issue from back in the day, we have been recommending customers get theirs welded. It might cost $20-30, but Magnaflow's warranty resolution for the issue is a bigger pain in the butt for most people. Basically, they ship you a whole new exhaust, then you have to pluck what you need out, and put the bad part back in teh box in it's place. Then the whole system needs to be shipped back. Again...this is just from a bad run of X-pipes a few months back. It has since been resolved.

I knew I should have paid more attention in school? How many horses are in a Kilowatt?
.7457 kW per hp
217kW = 291hp
283kW = 380hp
I knew I should have paid more attention in school? How many horses are in a Kilowatt? 1 kw x 1.34 = 1.34hp
217 kw x 1.34 = 291hp
Very impressive gains.
