Engine temp warning?
dealer oil change...? NEW Pics of my YJ!? Have You Ever....?
Engine temp warning
Lately, while driving, my engine oil temperature gauge will rise all the way to the red. I have not been driving the car hard when this happens either. It happens at random, a few times a day lately, but within seconds it goes back down to normal. I am at the dealership right now having them change my oil and check all my fluids. Is this just a glitch in the computer? I'll take a SWAG. Sensor or wire. Gerry Engine oil temp? Is that a typo and you meant coolant temp gauge? There is no factory oil temp gauge. Assuming you meant coolant temp, it was a known glitch in the 04's but not in the 05/06's. I have noticed after a day of driving it, it only happens whenever I start the car. Within a minute of start up, it goes up, warns me, then goes back to normal.
dealer oil change...
Since mobil 1 synth 5W30 is the recommend oil for the GTO...is that what the dealer will actually put in it? I normally change the oil myself but my neck and back are screwed at the moment so I can't. I really don't want the dealer to do it, but I don't have much choice at the moment. You're probably going to have to request it. Otherwise they'll put normal oil in. They put normal in mine even though I asked for the synthetic..I noticed on the price and had them change it out and flush the whole system.. For the 05/06 they HAVE to put Mobil 1 5W30 in it because that is the factory fill, as well as the oil specified in the manual. The only acceptable alternative is another 5W30 synthetic that meets the GM4178 standard. If they put anything else in your car, you have every right to wave the manual in their face and insist they change it again. I know alot of guys with problematic dealer oil changes. Take mine to the "Qwicky-lube" where I can oversee the protocol. dealer puts m1 in mine. the dealer is supposed to use m1 since it is what the factory recommends. Whenever I have taken mine to the dealer they have always used m1. if you want to be sure just talk to someone to make sure that they do put in m1. My local firestone do-it-all garage (some fancy name for it) lets me bring my own oil and only charges $15 to change it and the filter. You can watch too. I know alot of guys with problematic dealer oil changes. Take mine to the "Qwicky-lube" where I can oversee the protocol. Not the best idea either, with all the quick-lube horror stories about stripped drain plugs/oil drained & not filled, etc. and the resultant blown engines. Not the best idea either, with all the quick-lube horror stories about stripped drain plugs/oil drained & not filled, etc. and the resultant blown engines. that's exactly why i change my own oil. and i would rather spend my 20 bucks on gas than at the quickie lube and i don't trust them The guy that changes my oil gets it right every time. :o He works cheap too. ;) When I was having the dealership do the oil changes (when it was 50 bucks total), I had to request it the first time, but after that, they would ask "you want Mobil 1, right?" and obviously I'd say yes. When they wanted 75 bucks for a change, I said bye bye. Iknow the guys at my local dealer pretty well. They always ask, "Mobil 1, right?" Yep... How about I took my car in for a 6k service, just check whatever but no oil change...I change my oil in everything I've ever owned. Well the dude asked if they were going to change the oil...I said no, I already did before I came up here. And he said well thats good because they charge....a little over $110 for a oil change! So its like $15 per quart, I just laughed and said yea, like I said no oil change. Ridiculous I tell ya! Washington state is stupid about getting every single dollar from people. I hate this state! Not the best idea either, with all the quick-lube horror stories about stripped drain plugs/oil drained & not filled, etc. and the resultant blown engines. Good point, however I trust the shop as they are recommendedand I trust them. I brought my own 6 quarts of oil in so I wouldn't have to purchase their oil. They came to me and said my car req's 6.5 and gave me .5 for free. Yeah, the Dealer can put in any oil that meets the GM4718M spec for the 05-06's. Usually these are Full Synthetic oils. However, for the 04's dealerships only need to put in and oil that meets GM6094M which is the Service Fill specification and includes many conventional oils. HOWEVER, since the LS1 in the Corvettes required GM4718M I do not understand how GM didn't require it for the LS1 in the 04 GTOs (guess GTO owners drive more mild...yeah right) so I would recommend using an oil that meets GM4718M in the LS1 GTOs as well. An oil that meets GM4718M would exceed the requirements for GM6094M so you would still be in compliance with your warranty. I go to a local shop.. mobil 1 syn my totals 60 bucks. I don't like the dealer price and no way trust a chain place like Lube pros or jiffy lube I took mine to the dealership for the 1st oil change and logically assumed they were going to use Mobil 1. Wrong. They put dino oil in it. That was the last time the goat has been to the dealer. Now I do all oil changes and maintenance myself. Also, they torqued the drain plug so tightly, I thought I was gonna break the bolt off trying to unscrew it. The plug has an o-ring on it to help seal and doesn't need much torque. Officially, it's 18 ft. lbs. Unless you really trust the person changing your oil or doing other maintenance, it's better to do it yourself. My stock oil cap has printed on it very clearly what they should be putting in. If they ask, I just point it out to them. :slap: I usually use the dealer for the first 3 or 4 changes, then do it myself. I've had too many scary experiences at quicky oil change shops to ever go back to them again. I've had all of the following happen on past vehicles. -missing screws on air filter box -oil cap not replaced correctly (or at all) -dented hood because the guy shut it with his elbows -lost or missing: wiper fluid reservoir cap, engine oil cap, dip stick -cross threaded drain plug on the pan -engine grease on the seats (they did a free vacuuming on the interior: eh... thanks) -door dings -scratches on the door due to keys left in the side lock -oil spray around the filter where the gasket wasn't properly seated (how they managed that one, I'll can only fathom a guess) If you haven't had any of this happen to you, it's only a matter of time while you play the odds. Dealer does mine $50 out the door. I ask for Mobil 1, and they say that's what they put in it. (The receipt says synthetic oil, but not mobil 1 by name). I don't have any reason to think they're lying...I've just never seen with my own eyes what they put in. Until I catch them lying, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. I used to change my own oil, but for the few bucks I save doing it myself, I also have drag my jack and stands out to where the car is (about 50 yards), jack up the car, spend 20 min. changing the oil, haul the old oil back to the parts store, then take a shower because I'm filthy from crawling under the car. The $15 bucks or so that I save is, well...high schoolish. Fo those with access to a lift...more power to ya. It's just not for me anymore. I used to change mine all of the time when I owned my 2001 Formula, then I got to where like the above posted said it was a hassle to change it then haul the same nasty oil in my car adn take a chance of it spilling to go and dump it. So I found a local place that would only change the oil and filter for $12 if I brought the Mobile 1 5w-30 and AC Delco filter. The GTO has a oil change contract on it thru my dealer. I paid $300 for the contract and for the life of my owning the car they will change the oil every 3000 miles with Mobile 1 and a AC delco filter for free, rotate the tires (If I could, staggered now so I cant) and I get a extre lifetime warranty on the engine against failure. My oil changes cost at least $50 per change so after 6 oil changes I ahve broke even. I even spot checked the invoice and ran the part numbers to make sure of them and the oil part numbers come back as Mobile 1 and I try to watch and both time I have watched the tech has went and got a case of Mobile 1 and brought it over to my car. I did make sure to ask several times and even got the service manager involved to make sure that they use Mobile 1 as it is in the manual and on the cap. They said as long as it is in the manual then they follow the manual's recommendation unless I specify other. Do it yourself and it solves the problem. The guy changing your oil is making $8 hr, don't expect him to care, or read the oil fill cap. ...oh yea, we put Mobil 1 in... If you can't do it yourself, find a good tech at a local shop and stay with him. Chain fast lube and Dealers are all profit based, they only worry about their money. Chain fast lube and Dealers are all profit based, they only worry about their money. Not true. I run a Jiffy Lube, I actually find it funny about some of your guys comments about them. You'd be surprised how much a Jiffy Lube cares about customer service. Do it yourself and it solves the problem. I have a busted disc in my neck, can't even move my head in any direction. I'm on so many painkillers that I would probably fill the car up with Kool Aid. I take mine to the local "grease monkey" They are teh awesomeness! They know me there, I used to bring my monte carlo there. I can go in the pit, walk around in the garage and I get a fat discount. You just need to be nice to the techs (free ride with :gears:) Not true. I run a Jiffy Lube, I actually find it funny about some of your guys comments about them. Not knocking any one particular Jiffy Lube, but didnt dateline do a article on them about how they were charging their customers for work that was not being done. I know that all shops dont do this and that alot of shops do sometimes preform shaddy services. I stay away from shops in general, do most of my repairs myself, except for the oil changes and for the reason I stated above in my previous post. Have You Ever....
Gone to a MUSTANG forum site and read the stuff they say about GTO's. It was unreal....."I had the GTO by 2 car lengths" they must all be running some superchared roushes or something. One poster had a pic af a cavalier next to to a pic of a GTO ....THE CAPTION WAS THIS IS A CAVALIER .....THIS IS A CAVALIER ON DRUGS.....The smack talk was crazy....they did all like our seats.... ROFL You can deny the speed all you want, but there is NO denying the seats. GTO seats FTMFW!! They probably raced a Cavailer. I race a new GT with my SSS when i had it and i had him by a half a car length. I think the guy just couldnt drive manual. maybe they are racing 04's I would think a stock 04 GTO and stock Mustang GT would be a drivers race. Nobody cares about cross forum wars. :aus_flag: I ran a new mustang gt stock with my 04 a4 stock. I walked away from him after he was out of first gear. It wasn't a bad race, he was probably only 2 cars back at 120ish, but he still lost, and he had the better launch. They sure as hell brake better than the 04 GTO though lol. I dont give them the time of day. There is enough BS on this site alone. :gr_jest: Most of the time i just look over at laugh at them. lol as they try to show off for their girl friend in the passenger seat. I let them take off a little then I punch it and go flying past them :) I beat up on mustangs just for the hell of it not cause they are fast. maybe they are racing 04's I would think a stock 04 GTO and stock Mustang GT would be a drivers race. Hasn't been for me. Tangled with two new GT's and it was the same result. The shelby cobra is where the problems for us GTOs are at. Saw one at the track the other day, test pipes, pully, chip, and drag radials. 10.7s. I saw his 10.93 slip... unfreakin believable. The shelby cobra is where the problems for us GTOs are at. Saw one at the track the other day, test pipes, pully, chip, and drag radials. 10.7s. I saw his 10.93 slip... unfreakin believable. I dont belive that. Are you sure he didn't have a KB under the hood? O well. The only thing that matters is when the lights go green. Nobody cares about cross forum wars. :aus_flag: as a member of 4 different mustangs sites and the former owner of 4 different mustangs. Yup. PS, and the defender of GTOs on said mustangs sites from the beginning Mustang forum board are usually pretty hostile all together. Everyone thinks everyone is talking smack and they think they are the fastest car made. I like nipples. They sure as hell brake better than the 04 GTO though lol. What doesn't? :) Gone to a MUSTANG forum site and read the stuff they say about GTO's. No.. Gone to a MUSTANG forum site and read the stuff they say about GTO's. Nope I've got plenty of other ways to waste my time. It wouldn't be a very successfull Mustang forum if all they did was talk about how good the GTO's are. All forums are the same. Let's face it folks: we're in denial here and we're just afraid of them thar Rustangs... Scary beasts. "Gotta have it" factor wins every time. Even when I (routinely) kick their asses on the street or strip, they slink away with their C&D magazine or assuage their egos on their boards. It wouldn't be a very successfull Mustang forum if all they did was talk about how good the GTO's are. All forums are the same. Couldn't have said it better myself. Mustang's annoy me. I can't remember how many I saw on the way to school today, I am always lookin for a Cobra (not that I can beat one, I just think they are bad ass) and they are usually a GT, sometimes V6's are exciting though, there are some hott b****es that drive those. You are aware that there are many very fast mustangs, right? grow up and leave it be. I get beat by Mustang GT's daily. ohhh, I forgot to mention...I don't race them. maybe they are racing 04's I would think a stock 04 GTO and stock Mustang GT would be a drivers race. NOT All this reminds me of an enounter I had almost 3 years ago. I just bought my 04, and caught a rolling race with a then brand new 05 GT. After beating him I slowed down, and he asked what the hell I was driving!!! His statement was "I have 300 HP!!! What the hell do you have under that hood???" I answered "LS1". :D the thing i like about Rustangs is when i roll up to a four way stop in my GTO odds are there are three of them sitting there... mainly with girls driving them hehe, i started a thread like this once...didn't end well...at least you aren't marrying a mustang guy  :p
