I've got a 79 bronco with 351M, 397,000 miles. My father bought it new, and it has been very well taken care of. The bearings are worn leaving me with low oil pressure at warm idle. Is it worth just replacing the bearings, or is this a waste. There is no way I can be plowing with it in the condition it is in now. This truck strickly does residental within 5 miles of the shop. It is only used for plowing and sits the whole summer. I only put about 3,000 miles on per year plowing, give or take some depending on snowfall. I was really hoping it would make it through this year, but there is no way. Money is tight this time of year, so replacing it is pretty well out of the question until next year. Will replacing the bearings get me through this winter, or should I dedicate another truck to this one's route. Andy i wouldnt replace the bearings without polishing or cutting the crank.did you try to put a thicker oil in it and heating it up to see where the pressure is? Not an option where I am at. Temp in January can reach -30deg. Its hard enough to get a new truck started in those temps. Yes, I do have a block heater on it, but it is a water jacket style, not an oil heater style. Andy then i would tell you to wait till you can afford to go thru the entire motor and rebuild it Long0, You should be counting you blessing the 351M made over 300,000 without a rebuild yet. Low pressure in that motor is less than 10psi when warm but since you are in a part of SIBERIA better known as the mountains of Colorado the motor may never get warm during the winter. Have done several re-Bearing jobs on 70-100,000 mile motors. Paul is right you should polish the crank or put in a regrind but you can just pull the pan, mic the crank for round/out of round and put in new bearings with a minor polish or none at all. You will have to probably get under sized bearings to match the crank. Possibly a mixed set depending on wear. Do the dirt track racers trick, get them as close to size as you can, put it back together and give it hell till it blow's. Then find the other truck to run the route. In all seriousness. You can split the tranny off the motor. Pop the flywheel, Drop the crank and put in a regrind too. As long as the motor still has good compression it wouldn't be that hard and only a few $$ more than bearings and would last longer. Drop the pan and check it out. Jerre I weighed my options, and finally decided that it would cost me more if this truck was not running, than it would to toss in a rebuilt one. Found a remanfactured motor in Texas for under $900. My girlfriend want to go see here parents in Texas anyway, so she is going to pick it up next week. Thanks for the help guys. Does'nt look to bad for having almost 400,000 miles. thats an awesome bronco, its ok besides the one problem? if so thats great for its age and miles on it, ever think about putting a salter on it? got great storage in the back. nice and dry. X springs
What are X springs? I just bought a 2002 F350 regular cab with the diesel. It has a plow prep package. Do I have X springs? What exactly does the plow prep package entail? Open your driverside door and look at the doorjam sticker. Find on there where it talks about springs. There will be 2 letters under where it says springs. First letter is front spring code, 2nd letter is rear spring code. If first letter is "X", there you go. X springs i believe are rated at 5200lbs. Mike By the way, congrats on the new truck. Does it have a plow already, or are you getting one? If so what kind? Ditto what Mike said:D If it came with the Plow Prep Pkg., then you have X's. The X springs are actually rated at 6000 lbs but your listed front GAWR will be 5200 lbs. Congrats on the truck:drinkup: Greg I just put a Boss 8'2" V plow on it a couple of days ago. With the plow on the truck the lowest part of the plow frame sits 9" off the ground. When the plow is raised it sits 8 3/4" off the ground. Is this normal? Should it drop that much when the plow is raised or do I need to look into air shocks or even another leaf? Butler Its only dropping 1/4"? Thats nothing. You gotta expect some sort of drop when the plow is raised. Im not sure what that particular plow weighs, but im sure its quite heavy. Mike I'm sorry, the plow went from 9" to 7 3/4" not 8 3/4" Butler id say thats normal. The boss V is no light weight.I have the Boss 9'2"V on my Ram 2500,and it drops about the same as yours,so i wouldnt worry about it. suspension problem
Hello I have a 97 Ford250 HD reg cab and i just bought a brand new superduty 7.5 boss plow. When the plow is on it looks like that tires are giving out. Like the front is riding on the inside of the tire. I was wondering if there is something i can do to fix it Thanks for the help :D Not sure, but isnt the 97 f250 the one with that weird design frontend, twin i beam, or something? Mike ya it does have a twin i beam what does that mean No offense, but it means its a terrible setup. That is why you are having that problem. They tear up tires without a plow, with a plow i can imagine. Im not sure if you can get it aligned or not to try and compensate. Check with your local tire shop. That was truly a terrible design, anyone who knows about cars/trucks would agree. Mike Install Timbrens or add a leafs to keep the tires straight with the plow on. Not the best solution (solid axle swap) but with an alignment it should help. By the way I think a 7'6" plow is too small for that truck. 8ft minimum for a F250/F350 IMO. My friend runs a 9ft Diamond (vey heavy) on his 95 250 with a TTB front end. We had to beef up the suspension. When the axle goes it may get the solid 350 front I have at my shop. thanks for the help i think i will try the timbrens and put a leaf in were do i buy the timbrens and do i have to do it to the back end also to make it even. Thanks for the help Rob
